Albert was born 1884 Rockylead Daylesford Victoria to parents A. E. Ragatz and M. Ragatz. He had a brother Andrew who also served in WW1 (2662). He had Rheumatic fever in 1902 and this would have contributed to him being sent home an invalid with a heart condition. We do not know of any family, but an Elizabeth died in 1921 wife of Albert at Ouyen. No death date for Albert.

Andrew was born 1890 Dean, Daylesford to A.E. Ragatz and M. Ragatz. His father was from Switzerland. He had a brother Albert Edward who also served in WW1 (3919). Andrew married Mary ?, they had nine children George Thomas, Frederick, Albert, Richard, Marie, Andrew, Lizette, Adelaide and Annie. (Trove wedding notice of Lizette and death of Mary 1942). Mary died at Rocklyn, but no death for Andrew.

They had one daughter Marjorie. In 1936 Annie Lilian Rankin re-married Mr. Jell of Swan Hill. Malcolm’s brother-in-law T. H. Goodall was also KIA October 25, 1917.

Born at Coldstream in 1889 to Frederick Read and Mary Ann Read, nee Hussey (1851-1937) [wikitree]. He was Anglican. Edward’s siblings were Lily Maud Mary; Emily Jane; Catherine May; William and Frederick James.

He was an early member of the Lilydale R.S.L. and financial from 1935 to at least 1937. They listed his addresses as Wandin Yallock and Wandin North.

Family Story:

Hubert ‘Bert’ was born at Gruyere in 1892 to Charles Read and Margaret Ann Read, nee Caithness. He was a Methodist.

At the Seville send-off to enlisted men it was noted that ‘H. L. Read is already at the Dardanelles’. His father Charles also spoke. [Lilydale Express May 14, 1915 p5]

On May 27, 1915 his mother asks for an address to write to.

Lilydale Express May 28, 1915 p4: Wounded at the war: Seville – The parents of H. R. Read, one of our boys at the front, have received word from the defence authorities that their son has been wounded in action at the Dardanelles. A private cablegram from the wounded soldier says that he is doing well and we all hope such is the case. Private Read was with the 6th Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade and the parents received the news, of their son being wounded, on his 23rd birthday.

Lilydale Express July 9, 1915 p5: Wounded Sevillette progressing…Private Read embarked for England [from Malta] in the hospital ship Loyola. In a letter [he said] he was wounded on the side of the left eye, the bullet coming out of the left ear…he has not lost his sight…They were the second lot to land [at Gallipoil] on 25th April. he was wounded on 8th May and lay in a gutter until dark, when he was taken down by one of the 8th Btn.

Lilydale Express November 12, 1915 p5: [Private Read writes] I have practically lost the sight of my left eye, but that doesn’t matter as it is all in the game…I have been recommended for discharge.. I am [taking a job here] on home service. I have been for a fortnight’s furlough and visited [Scotland] then came to London for a few days and stayed with an English General who took me to see all the principal places…I am [now] working at Woodcote Park, Epsom.

By September 1916 Bert was living at ‘Tecoma’ Seville, his father’s residence, and sought his discharge. Bert was a member of Lilydale R.S.L. and financial until at least 1937.

His father Charles died in 1921: Read – On 3rd November at his residence ‘Tecoma’ Seville, suddenly, Charles, the dearly beloved husband of Margaret Read, loving father of Florence (Mrs J. O. Aitken), Eva (Mrs E. H. Wallace), George (Len), Hubert (Bert), Una and Roy, aged 63. [Lilydale Express November 5, 1921]

His mother Margaret died in 1934:
Read – On 14th October 1934, at Seville, Margaret, relict of the late Charles Read, of Seville, and dearly beloved mother of Florence (Mrs J. O. Aitken), Eva (Mrs E. H. Wallace), George Leonard, Hubert Lindsay, Una (Mrs G. Keenan) and Roy, aged 73 years. An obituary was also included [Lilydale Express August 17, 1934]

His father died in December 1915 aged 49 years at home ‘Glendara’ dairy farm Yering and young Bill was given leave to return home to attend to family matters.

Bill married in 1917 to Elizabeth Olive Park and they had 3 children, William (b)1918, May (b) 1919 and Ivy (b) 1924. Bill died March 17, 1974 aged 83 years at Surrey Hills, he was buried at Lilydale CE4-447 6142/7712. Elizabeth died October 2, 1960.

Family Story:

Charles was born 1883/6 West Pennard Glastonbury Somerset England to parents Thomas and mother unknown. He came to Australia 1910, working in the sugar cane fields of Queensland before coming to Lilydale, were he enlisted in 1915.

He served in various theatres of war and it was as a stretcher bearer that he was awarded the Military Medal.

He joined the railways after the war and on January 22, 1921 he married Veronica (Vera) Stephenson at St John’s Anglican Church in Lilydale. They had 2 children ,Warren Charles and Dorothy. Charles died in 1943 aged 60 years and was buried in the Lilydale cemetery on June 5. Vera died 1948 and is also buried at Lilydale.

George was born 1891 at Bylands near Kilmore to parents James Reid and Jane Coulson. Siblings not known. (BDM)

In 1919 after returning from the war he married Hilda Vera Goode (her father was Frank Edward Goode and mother Marie Broadbent). He was living in Beechworth in April 1935 (Service records pg no 27). George died at Box Hill in 1964 aged 72 years, and was cremated at Springvale on February 3, 1964. Hilda died 1969 in Melbourne aged 77 years and was cremated on November 15 at Springvale.

Stan was born 1898 in South Richmond to parents Joseph and Jessie Robinson. They lived in Castella Street Lilydale and he attended Lilydale State School. When he enlisted in 1915 he was a school teacher at this school. His family later moved to Brunswick.

After the official opening of the Lilydale Higher Elementary School on May 2, 1919, The Minister for Education the Hon. William Hutchinson unveiled two enlarged photographs of Signaller Stanley Robinson: “one as he was known to the scholars of the school and one in military uniform and these are now hung in the new school buildings.” (Lilydale Express May 9, 1919 pg3)

Edmund John was born to parents Mr John Norman Rossiter, his mother deceased at time of enlistment in 1915. His father was living at Burleigh House Silvan. It is not known if he married or had family. He died 1986 and was cremated on March 7 at Springvale and his ashes scattered.

Family Story:

Alfred lived in Main Street Lilydale with his guardians William and Mary Rothque, who’s surname he adopted.
William had a livery stable and Alfred worked as a cab driver. William also served in WW1 (no. 37575).

We do not know if Alfred married or had a family, he died in 1974 and was buried at Lilydale Cemetery on November 20 (Reg. No. 7876).

Both William and Mary are buried at Lilydale (Reg No. 4555/4622).

Family Story:

William was born in 1873 North Melbourne, parents not known. He was married to Mary Emma Rothque and were the guardians to Alfred Maurice (Hurley) Rothque, who took their surname and also served in WW1 (61686).

As a young man William was a jockey. He had a fall, and Dr Norris patched him up. After it was realised that he could no longer be a jockey, Mr Norris took him on as his buggy driver. (Volume 2 –Shire of Lillydale Military History, Anthony McAleer pg 227).

William died 1951 and was buried at Lilydale Cemetery on August 4 (Reg No. 4555). Mary died 1930 and was buried also at Lilydale on June 28 (Reg No. 4622)

In 1918 he married Florence Louisa Billings (BDM and Ancestry) there was no known family. Henry died at Heidelberg September 26t, 1949 aged 63 years and was cremated at Springvale Cemetery.
