Obituary:
The later Mr Harry Walker J.P. A sense of loss and bereavement has fallen upon the settlement of Mt Dandenong due to the sudden death of Mr Harry Walker J.P. In the middle of an active life he was suddenly stricken down, and after a short illness died on Friday morning 10th October at the comparatively early age of 56. Of a quiet and retiring disposition, Mr Walker was yet ready to lend his help in every social or public effort for the improvement of the district. He took a deep interest in the Methodist Church of which he was treasurer . . . The deep respect in which Mr Walker was held by the residents was clearly shown a short time ago when the want of a local honorary magistrate was felt. He was selected by a large majority as the best fitted for that positon. Mr Walker was one of the original settlers when the Mt Dandenong forest was opened for settlement, moving up here from Montrose, where he was brought up. His raspberry garden has often been photographed as one of the show gardens of the mountain being beautifully situated and always well kept . . . Mr William Walker, the eldest son is at present at sea, returning after four years active service abroad, and will not hear the sad news of his father’s death until his arrival in Australia. Susan Walker
Obituary:
On Sunday, August 24th, the pale horse and its rider visited Montrose and removed one of the oldest residents of this district in the person of Mrs James Walker, senr. (relict of the late James Walker). Close on 40 years ago the deceased lady settled in this district and to talk to her of the early history of this district makes realise how much the pioneers had to put up with . . . Mrs Walker, who was born at Cork Head, Ireland, arrived in Victoria in 1840 and was therefore a colonist of 53 years. Mrs Walker had the unique distinction that during the whole of the 73 years of her life she was never once attended by a doctor, a record which, not doubt would be hard to beat . . . The burial took place in the Lilydale Cemetery, where a good number of friends and residents assembled to pay their last tribute of respect and to show their sympathy for the bereaved family.
