[Montrose and LDHS files]

Obituary:

The later Mr Harry Walker J.P. A sense of loss and bereavement has fallen upon the settlement of Mt Dandenong due to the sudden death of Mr Harry Walker J.P. In the middle of an active life he was suddenly stricken down, and after a short illness died on Friday morning 10th October at the comparatively early age of 56. Of a quiet and retiring disposition, Mr Walker was yet ready to lend his help in every social or public effort for the improvement of the district. He took a deep interest in the Methodist Church of which he was treasurer . . . The deep respect in which Mr Walker was held by the residents was clearly shown a short time ago when the want of a local honorary magistrate was felt. He was selected by a large majority as the best fitted for that positon. Mr Walker was one of the original settlers when the Mt Dandenong forest was opened for settlement, moving up here from Montrose, where he was brought up. His raspberry garden has often been photographed as one of the show gardens of the mountain being beautifully situated and always well kept . . . Mr William Walker, the eldest son is at present at sea, returning after four years active service abroad, and will not hear the sad news of his father’s death until his arrival in Australia. [Lilydale Express 24-10-1919 pg 2]

Susan Walker

Obituary:

On Sunday, August 24th, the pale horse and its rider visited Montrose and removed one of the oldest residents of this district in the person of Mrs James Walker, senr. (relict of the late James Walker). Close on 40 years ago the deceased lady settled in this district and to talk to her of the early history of this district makes realise how much the pioneers had to put up with . . . Mrs Walker, who was born at Cork Head, Ireland, arrived in Victoria in 1840 and was therefore a colonist of 53 years. Mrs Walker had the unique distinction that during the whole of the 73 years of her life she was never once attended by a doctor, a record which, not doubt would be hard to beat . . . The burial took place in the Lilydale Cemetery, where a good number of friends and residents assembled to pay their last tribute of respect and to show their sympathy for the bereaved family. Biography:

Hector Whisson was sadly killed on May 9 when he was returning to his home in Belgrave after visiting his parents in Lilydale. He worked in a garage in Belgrave and was for many years an active member of the Lilydale Orient Lodge. [Lilydale Express 17-05-1929]

Obituary:

Mr R. Maggs, who was riding his motor cycle along the road, saw an overturned car just down an embankment, and on investigating –though not anticipating it – found that the body of Hector Whisson was pinned beneath it. . . . The night on which the accident occurred was extremely foggy. . . . He left to return to Belgrave some time after eleven o’clock. After descending the steep hill near Black Springs, Whisson’s car, just before reaching the turn, left the road.  . . . It overturned and crushed the unfortunate driver  . . evidence of the esteem in which the young man was held was manifested by the very large cortege which followed his remains to the Lilydale cemetery, somewhere in the vicinity of 20 or 30 cars conveying relatives and friends. Wor. Bro. C.H. Reakes performed the last rites of the Masonic Lodge. [Lilydale Express 17-05-1929]

Herbert Whisson

Herbert Whisson was recruited by David Mitchell to come to Australia to make soap for him at Cave Hill. He arrived aboard the vessel Ophir in January 1911. His family followed the next year, arriving on the Makarini in July 1912. His home in Main St Lilydale was owned by David Mitchell. Herbert Whisson, soap maker first appears in the rate books in the 1912-1913 year. [PROV Shipping Records and Shire of Lillydale Rate Books 1912-1913 pg 21 entry No. 522]

Obituary:

We regret to announce the death of an old and highly respected resident of Lilydale %u2026 Mr Herbert Whisson, which occurred suddenly at his residence . . . The deceased gentleman came to Lilydale with his family about 23 years ago, and for many years was employed at Cave Hill when soap making was one of the chief industries of the firm, which was then controlled by the late David Mitchell. After this branch of the works was closed down the later Mr Whisson was engaged as manager of the soap making department of Sims, Cooper and Co., Geelong, which position he held until the time of his death. He leaves a widow and grown-up family . . . . Of the latter Ronald and Lionel are in business in the main street, and two of his daughters Mrs Delver and Mrs Mason are also residents of Lilydale. The other members of the family are Cecil (Geelong), Mrs Stanley (Footscray), and Mrs Turner (Yarraville). [Lilydale Express 02-06-1933 pg 3]

Emily Whisson

Obituary:

The death occurred on Thursday, October 12 of Mrs Whisson of the Victoria Coffee Palace, Lilydale at the age of 75 years. The late Mrs Whisson arrived in Lilydale with her husband 27 years ago, the latter predeceasing her by six years. . . . After her husband’s death Mrs Whisson carried on the coffee palace with the industry for which she was noted until, a few months back, she was afflicted with the illness which brought about her death. Through it all she maintained her usual cheery disposition. [Lilydale Express 20-10-1939 pg 3]

Lionel Whisson

Obituary:

Mr Whisson was a son of the late Mr and Mrs Whisson, who conducted the coffee palace at the corner of Clarke and Main streets about thirty years ago. Deceased made a study of electrical and radio science, and his weekly articles in the “Express” on these subjects evoked much favourable comment. He established an electrical business in Lilydale which he later disposed of to the present owner (Mr W.J. Bennett) in order to take over a similar concern in Adelaide, in conjunction with a picture theatre. Failing health and a desire to return to his home town caused him to relinquish this enterprise. His sojourn here was of short duration, as his strength gradually faded away, and the end came peacefully on Thursday last. . .  Sincerest sympathy is extended to his bereaved wife, son and daughter. Obituary:

Scrub cutter killed Fatality at Kalorama. In rather unusual manner Thomas (should be William) Ashcroft White, aged 57, met his death at Kalorama on Friday last. With two companions he was clearing scrub, and was working on a log about 50ft long. Which was lying crosswise on another log. Deceased was cutting branches from the small end of the log, his companions in the meantime levering as the larger end to shift it. Suddenly the log left its position and skidded down the local underneath, which was evidently lying on the slant. The small end of the tree flew up and struck deceased on the head, death being almost instantaneous. [Lilydale Express 19-12-1930]

Joseph Wilson

Obituary:

Last week another old and respected resident was gathered to his fathers in the person of Mr Joseph Wilson, who had reached the advanced age of 87 years. . . . On Friday last Mr Wilson was about as usual and during the day was briefly engaged in chopping wood. On retiring to bed he complained of indisposition . . .he expired before midnight. Deceased, who was born in London, arrived in colony in 1842 with his wife and three children, and spent about eight years at the cabinet-making trade in Melbourne. [He became] a leading spirit in Collin St Baptist Church, superintending the school work. He worked for the church at South Yarra, then moved to Lilydale 37 years ago . . . . he assisted the establishment of the Methodist Church in Lilydale, taking services and serving the school. [Also] at the ‘kirk’ erected by the followers of John Knox . . . . where he also learnt a helping hand leading the singing . . . and in 1880 was one of the principals in raising the extension chapel . . . After severance with the Presbyterians he frequently conducted Baptist services, but about 10 years ago a paralytic stroke and failing speech caused his retirement. A family of eight children survive, including W. H. Wilson senior deacon and superintendent of the local Baptist church and school, and Mrs Alway of Albert Hill. Mrs Wilson, his wife, is 83 and her sister-in-law is in her 91st year. The funeral took place on Monday last at Lilydale Cemetery. [Lilydale Express 18-06-1897]
