Biography:
John Dallas’ saddler’s shop was on the north side of Lilydale’s Main Street, next to the old school house and east of the Lilydale Hotel. Jack, when a star boxer, was known as “The Benecia Boy.” He combined his saddlery with a bark hut stadium, where a number of locals were taught the art. He was a local celebrity, both for his vocabulary and his powers of entertaining the general and visiting public. He died during a friendly boxing match at Parr’s Hall. At the Inquest that was held at the Lilydale Court House it was found that he “died from sero-sanguineous apoplexy and no blame was attachable to anyone.” John Dallas was born in Brick-lane Shoreditch, and at the time of his death was 60 years old.
He came to Victoria 36 years earlier and after settling initially in Healesville moved to about Lilydale 25 years ago though his name appears in the Shire of Lillydale ratebooks in 1971. He married Mary Ann Harvey in 1880 but they had no children. He worked for a short time in a London printing office before taking up boxing. He said he had never been beaten. At one time he was champion light weight of Victoria.
He was a supporter of the Church of England and in his Will left £25 each to the Lilydale Church of England, Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist churches [Back to Lilydale Re-union and Lilydale Express 13-10-1888, ABD]
Obituary:
Death of Mr J.A. Dallas. After we had gone to press last night we received intelligence of the awfully sudden death of Mr John Dallas, one of or oldest and most respected townsmen. It appears that Mr Dallas was present at the boxing exhibition at Parr’s Hall and was engaged in sparing with H. Baker, when he was suddenly seized with a fit of apoplexy, and died upon the stage. The affair, as may be imagined, created the greatest sensation amongst the audience….. [Lilydale Express 10-10-1888]

News Item:
The Suicide of a Bank Clerk – Morwell Thursday – An Inquiry touching the death of Rudolph Deschamp a clerk in the local branch of the Colonial Bank who committed suicide yesterday, was held today…The manager of the bank (Mr A.W. Witt) stated that in consequence of becoming intoxicated during the holidays deceased had neglected to send a return to the head office as instructed. This, combined with the fact that he was behind with his work, made him very despondent. Deceased knew he deserved dismissal, but others informed him that the matter would be overlooked….a verdict was returned that deceased came to his death by means of a bullet wound inflicted by his own hand, and that there was not sufficient evidence to show the condition of his mind at the time he committed the deed. Don’t mention it to anybody. Shall probably be back in time for band. Louis” .. At his funeral the Lilydale Bras Band preceeded the hearse playing the Dead March in Soul. Biography:
Fatal gun accident at Gruyere. John Drummond, 18, residing with his parents at Gruyere, met with a gun accident which proved fatal. Young Drummond and a friend took their guns to shoot kangaroos. John saw and shot a kangaroo and to kill it he took hold of the barrel of the gun and hit the animal with the stock. Unfortunately he did not notice the hammer was at full cock. When he went to hit the animal the gun went off the charge entered his side just below the liver. The wound was large enough for a man’s hand to go in. Before his death three hours later, he deposed what had happened to Dr Dutton and this was then tendered at the inquest held shortly afterwards a verdict of accidental death was returned by W. Laidlaw JP. John Drummond was the main bread winner as his father was an invalid. [Lilydale Express 12-09-1888]
