Obituary:
One of those sudden deaths which struck a community occurred when Mr. Robert Laird died at the Lilydale private hospital on Saturday morning last, after a brief illness. He was stricken down with influenza a week or so ago, and this developed into pneumonia. Medical aid was summoned on Friday last and Mr. Laird was immediately taken to the hospital, where all possible assistance and attention was given, but he was then beyond the aid of doctors and early on Saturday morning he succumbed.
The deceased gentleman was a native of Scotland and had been resident 16 years in Australia, 4½ of which had been spent in the employ of Mr W.M. Black, of Coldstream, as stud master. He also served for four years in the great war, during which period he was badly gassed, and in all probability this was the cause of his unexpected collapse. Mr. Black speaks very highly of deceased, and considers him one of the most competent and reliable man he ever had in his employed. The funeral took place at the Lilydale cemetery. Deceased leaves a widow and little boy, for whom the deepest sympathy is felt. [Lilydale Express 14-05-1926]
Thanks:
Mrs. R. M. Laird wishes to thank all friends, including members of the Lilydale branch of the P.W.M.U., for kind expressions of sympathy in her sad bereavement. “The Quarries” Stud, Coldstream. [Lilydale Express 06-06-1926]
