He signed a Statutory Declaration as McCarthy, about his birth date and name; however in 1917 the Government Statist claims indexes had been searched from 1894-1898 with no record of his birth found.
Attached to the Service Records of Thomas McCarthy is an application for enlistment dated November 10, 1917 at Flinders, in the name of Thomas Scales, grocer, with a postal address of Lilydale.
The Lilydale Progress Association congratulated Private T. Scales as a departing soldier. (Lilydale Express February 22, 1918).
T. Scales is noted as being on the Lilydale State School Honour Roll (Lilydale Express May 3, 1918). On October 16, 1919, T. McCarthy was admitted to Lilydale RSL as a transfer member. On March 25, 1920. The RSL minutes record him as acquiring one of the available ‘suit lengths’. However Minutes of a month before, in another hand, February 12, 1920 list T. Scales as a financial member.
It seems the Lilydale community knew Thomas as Scales because he lived with them but he was born McCarthy.
An Ancestry search finds the Lilydale Cemetery grave of Joseph and Nellie Black (nee Scales). An Ancientfaces.com search finds and Alfred Thomas Scales born 1869 at Lilydale to George and Mary Scales (nee Twogood).
