Family Story:
Percy was born January 25, 1897 in Launceston Tasmania to John Gartside and Argenteena Claridge. His mother was named as Mrs Eliza Jennings of Springvale in 1915. His father John Gartside of 9 Windsor St. Launceston Tasmania in 1916. His sister Mrs Annie Buckley was living in Kilsyth in 1917. Some of the various names used in his attempts to enlist were his mother’s maiden name and also his father’s first names.
Percy died in 1967 at Heidelberg and was cremated July 12, 1967 Springvale.

Family Story:
Adolphus Edward was born 1891 Lilydale to father Christian George Geiger, mother unknown. Mr Geiger came to Lilydale some-time in the 1870s and lived in Taylor St. Lilydale, he died 1918. He was an expert vignernon and had been employed by Mr C.G. Hutton at St.Huberts in Coldstream. There were 3 girls and 2 boys, Adolphus was the youngest son. (Lilydale Express December 13, 1918)
Adolphus was living in Perth WA. When he enlisted in 1914 and embarked from Freemantle, he listed his brother Mr. CW Geiger of the Government Motor Garage as his next of kin, later naming his father. The electoral rolls tell us that he was living in Perth 1915, Freemantle 1925-1936/7. The army pages 30 and 32 say that he was doing survey work in western Australia and was living at Hollywood WA.

Family Story:
Arthur was born 1899 in Windsor to parents Johann Carl Maria Geiger and Alice Aldridge. Mr Johan Geuer died 1950 in Elmore aged 80 years, Alice died 1956 Elmore 86 years.
A brother Charles Titchener Geuer died Lilydale 1965, he operated a cordial factory 1923-1939 in Chapel Street, Lilydale and also a laundry business 1930-1954.
It is not known if Arthur was married or if he had family. He died in 1970 aged 70 years at Mooroolbark, and was buried at Box Hill Cemetery. In the same burial plot were Alice Ada Adelaide Geuer (1983) and Judith Ann Geuer (1951).

August was born 1894 Nagambie to parents James Gilbert and Sarah Hannah Johnston, he had two brothers who also served WW1, George Ernest (b) 1886 (1321) who was a prisoner of the Turkish army and Ernest Vincent (b) 1891 (20192).
Ern and August sailed together on HMAT Medic. Their father James had a farm “Beauty Glipse” at Yering and later bought 160 acres at Scoresby and called farm “Rushdale”.
George and Ernest took up 80 acres each on the Soldier Settlement plan (on blocks next to father).
It is not known if August stayed in England or not.

Ern was born in 1891 to parents James Thomas Gilbert and Sarah Hannah Johnston. He had siblings George Ernest (b) 1886 (WW1 1321) August (Gus) (b) 1894 (WW1 20132) James Thomas (b) 1879 and sister Susie.
Ern and brother George took up Soldier Settlement lots of 80 acres each in Scoresby next door to their father’s farm “Rushdale”. Their father had previously owned farm at Yering called “Beauty Glipse”.(McAleer WW1 book).
In 1921 Ern married Margaret Elizabeth Kehoe (BDM) and had children Merle and William Edward. He died June 8, 1937 at Scoresby aged 45 years and is buried at Fern Tree Gully. Margaret died October 14, 1986 and is buried with Ernest.

Family Story:
George was born in 1886 to parents James Thomas Gilbert and Sarah Hannah Johnston, farmers of Yering. He had siblings James Thomas (b) 1879, Ern Vincent (b) 1891, WW1 20192, August (Gus) (b) 1894, WW1 20132 and Susie.
March 22, 1917 found him to be a prisoner of the Turkish Army at camp Borbynidge. (Army papers) After being captured in Turkey he was sent to Germany to help a farmer and his wife on their farm, he said later that the food in Germany was much better than Turkey. (A McAleer Soldiers WW2 book).
He was a single man of 29 years when he enlisted in 1915, and on return took up 80 acres each with brother Ern on The Soldier Settlement Plan in Scoresby. George married Lily Dinsdale in 1921 (BDM) and had 2 children. He died 1970 Dandenong aged 85 years, and was buried on September 14, 1970 at Ferntree Gully Cemetery. Lily died 1974 and was buried on April, 19, 1974 also at Ferntree Gully.

Family Story:
Barney was born 1878 in Richmond Victoria to parents Charles Gilson and Margaret McCormack, both of whom where deceased at the time of his enlistment in 1914. He was the 4th child in this family: James (b) 1871, Margaret May (b) 1873, William (b) 1875 also served WW1, Barney, Emma (b)1880 John (Jack) (b) 1882 was his next of kin – a Butcher in Lilydale, Catherine (b) 1883 and Julia (b) 1889.
Barney enlisted a second time after coming home in 1915 to have a Hernia operation, then going back again in 1916. He returned home with a wounded leg that he suffered from for many years, becoming a butcher like Jack.
While in England and before going to France Barney married Mary Annie Langley on November 23, 1916, in Wellington Somerset England. They lived in Clark Street and had children Charles (Bosco), Charlotte Eliza (Lottie) and Celia. Barney had a serious operation in 1938 in Melbourne and died. He was a good volunteer and all institutions in Lilydale, including the RSL, Athletics and the School felt his loss greatly. (Lilydale Express January 14, 1938)
He died on the January 13, 1938 and was buried at Lilydale Cemetery (Reg No. 2816). Mary died in Wonthaggi, and was buried February, 16, 1967 at Lilydale Cemetery (Reg No. 6656)

He married in 1911 to Margaret Shaw. When he returned from the war Margaret’s whereabouts was not known and his brother John was looking after a daughter. (BDM & Army records)
In 1939 he was living in Footscray, asking for a copy of his discharge papers. They had been lost in a bush fire in Tawonga, via Wodonga. (Army records pg.54)

Family Story:
Joseph was born May 26, 1899 at Lilydale to parents William Goodall and Olive Lewis.
He enlisted in Adelaide under the alias of Cyril Fish, stating that he was 21 years of age. After he arrived in England, this alias was discovered and being underage and without his parents permission to enlist, he was returned to Australia.
He died in 1974 in Bacchus Marsh and his place of burial is unknown.

On September 10, 1919 William married Ella Margaret Goodall at Murumbeena. They had four daughters, Elsie, Edith, Aileen and Wlima.
He died 1952 at Lilydale and is buried in the Lilydale Cemetery.

Family Story:
Ralph was born 1889 in Camberwell to parents Charles and Maria Goode. He had a sister Kathleen Marie. His mother later married a Mr Truelove.
Ralph was the first man in Lilydale to enlist (August 16, 1914), and after returning home, he married Kathleen Irene Phillips 1919/1920 in Lilydale.
They had a home 11 Clyde St Lilydale and he opened Goode’s Drapery Store in Main Street, he ran this store until 1955. They had 3 daughters, Gwenda (Mrs Mutimer 1927-2010), Merle (Mrs Slattery )and Shirley (Mrs Burchall).
Ralph was a founding member of the Lilydale RSL, 42 years of service, a leading member of the Cricket Club until 1939, later joining the Bowls club where he was a player, Secretary, President and a Life Member. (Lilydale Express February 3, 1961).
In the 1920s Ralph pursued his love of theatre, producing and directing performances of the Lilydale Amateur Dramatic Society. He was also Stipendiary Steward for the Lilydale Athletics Club and the official weather recorder. (A Stretcher Bearer’s War by Anthony McAleer).
Ralph Goode (Justice of the Peace) was presented with a framed Life Membership Certificate of the RSL of Australia in recognition of long and faithful services as a fellow member and worker of the Lilydale Sub-branch. (Lilydale Express July22, 1949).
He was honoured by Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II, in the New Year’s Honours list in 1954 and was awarded the MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire). The investiture took place at Government House and was conferred by Queen Elizabeth II. (Croydon and Ringwood Mail January 28, 1954.)
Ralph died on January 23, 1961 and was buried at Lilydale Cemetery (Reg. No. 6163). Kathleen died on June 1,3 1969 and was also buried at Lilydale Cemetery (Reg. No.6861)

Stan was born 1892 in Canterbury to Marie Goode (father not known) mother Married Mr Truelove. It is not known if Stan married or had children, he died in 1973 and was cremated 8th June at Springvale Cemetery.

Family Story:
Edward was born 8th May 1893 Seville to parents Isaac Robert Gray and Elizabeth Pearce, his father was an orchardist in Seville and he was one of twelve children. One brother Ebenezer Charles Gray also served in WW1 Service No. 1226.
In 1921 Edward married Eva Myrtle Atkinson, and they had a son Kenneth Edward Gray 1922-1924. He was a member of the RSL 1932-1937, living in Seville until 1924, the Maryborough 1925-1928, Mt.Evelyn 1931-1954.
Eva moved after Edwards death to Lilydale until 1980.
Edward died 23 September 1956 at Heidelberg and is buried Lilydale cemetery.

Family Story:
Ebernezer was born on September 18, 1886 to parents Isaac Robert Gray and Elizabeth Pearce. He was one of twelve siblings, one brother Edward Alexander also served in WW1 (3151).
His father Isaac was an orchardist Victoria Rd. Seville and named the property ‘Theodore’, he was a stone mason prior to moving to Seville in 1891.
Ebernezer (Ebe) became the first property owner in Seville to introduce irrigation per internal combustion engine in 1908. (Ref: Seville The Vision and the Reality)
Ebe married in 1923 to Fran Maria Gaudion and they 4 children Peter, Ray, Cedric and Eunice. Ebe died on November 1, 1970 aged 84 years and is buried in Lilydale Cemetery.

Family Story:
William August was born December 8, 1883 in Tunis Africa to parents Pierre (Peter) Guillerme and Rose Bergeon. He married Celine Rambour while on leave in France on the February 5, 1919 at Champagne les Wardrecques. They had four children – Henry Andrew Christopher, Marie Antionette, August and Kerry.
In 1891 when August was 8 years of age his father Peter was cellarman at Mr De Castella’s vineyard at Gruyere ( from “As it Happened” by Val Sheehan).
On the August 15, 1946 August Guillerme applied for Naturalisation, and at the time was living 197 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.
August died in 1954 aged 71 years in Fitzroy.

Hubert was born May 27, 1898 Yering to parents Daniel Guiney and Mary Elizabeth Dynon. He was one of eight children: Margaret, Victor Daniel, David, Mary Elizabeth Teresa, William Francis (80364), Dennis and Harry Timothy. Daniel and Mary lived at Coombe Farm, Coldstream.
While Hubert was recouping in England he AWOL in Ireland, where he married on July 21, 1925 Catherine Guiney (a 2nd cousin) at Brosna, Kerry, Ireland. They had 3 children after returning to Victoria: Mary Elizabeth, David Brendon and John.
Hubert died July 30, 1963 Malvern and is buried New Cheltenham Cemetery. Catherine died August 4, 1970 Prahran.
