A fatal accident occurred on the property of Captain A.E.T. Payne, “Yarraview” Lilydale ….. One of the shepherds … Charles Edward Savage, at about 4 o’clock in the afternoon was getting through the window of an outbuilding with a lamb in one arm and a gun in the other. The gun must have been jarred, for it was discharged, the shot penetrating the heart. Death was almost instantaneous. Deceased was 37 and leaves a wife and young family. [Lilydale Express 04-09-1925]

Obituary:
The death took place early on Wednesday morning at “Woodlands,” Lilydale, of Dr. Thomas Scott, M.R.C.S. Eng), L.R.C.P. (Edin.). Deceased, who was about 80 years of age, practiced many years ago at Hamilton, and subsequently at Warrnambool, where he took a prominent part in public affairs, and was held in high esteem by the townspeople. About two years ago he purchased “Woodlands”, and during his sojourn here he evinced a keen interest in and became associated with various local institutions. Deceased leaves two sons and one daughter. The latter and one of the former follow profession of their late father. The remains were buried in the Lilydale cemetery on Thursday. The Rev. H.M. Burns officiated at the grave, and Messrs Burton Bros. had charge of the funeral arrangements. [Lilydale Express 21-02-1913 pg4].

Biography:
Arthur Seale, his wife and two sons arrived in Australia from England in February. He bought an orchard at Wonga Park, and he and his family went to reside there. Sadly he hung himself in an old house near his home.
Magisterial Inquiry:
At the Lilydale Court House, Mr Harrison J.P. heard the evidence and found the cause of death was by suicide.
Mrs Searle gave evidence that her husband had been at the war, and suffered severely from shell shock, and when he returned from the war he was a different man, all his bouyancy having left him….. One of her sons went … to the hut close by, where they saw her husband hanging from a rafter. They at once untied the rope, and placed the man on a table which was in the hut. … The deceased left a letter in which he stated that he had taken his life, and put his misfortunes down to his having come to Australia. Henry Sebire
Biography:
Henry Sebire married Sophie Renouf in Melbourne in 1853. She died in 1855 leaving a daughter Sophie. In 1856 he married Martha Rihoy also from Guernsey. He selected Wandin land in 1867 corner Hunter and Wellington roads and later in Clegg Rd.
Today historic Mont de Lancey Homestead and Museum is a popular tourist attraction run be descendants. Five generations of Sebires have been born at Wandin. [Lilydale Cemetery tours Vol. 2 p21]
Obituary:
An In Memoriam service was held in Wandin Methodist Church to the late Mr Henry Sebire who passed away at his residence. . . [He] had been a member and trustee of the church since its establishment in the district…There was an excellent congregation and Rev. R. L. Reed conducted the service. Rev J. Barningham read his memoir of the deceased…Henry Sebire was born in the parish of St Sampson Guernsey 13.8.1828, the third of eight children, he attended the Sabbath school. . . His father was a stonemason and Henry commenced working with him . . . At 22 Henry sailed for Victoria arriving in January 1850, working as a stonemason in Melbourne for 17 years, where he married [Martha]. Very severe sorrow throughout this district at the death of Mrs Sebire senior, who passed away on Wednesday in her 74th year. [She] had been under the unremitting care of Dr Syme for many years but recently became more frail . . . the cause of death was heart trouble. She leaves a large family of grown up sons and daughters most of whom are residents of Wandin . . . [She] was one of the first settlers in Wandin residing here for between 40 and 50 years. Miss Lily Martha Sebire, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Henry Sebire, of [Mont de Lancy], Wandin, died suddenly at Hurstbridge where she had been staying with friends . . . William John Sebire
Biography:
William, known as Bill, married Esther Cook, the eldest daughter of C. Cook at St John’s Anglican Church , Lilydale on December 14, 1898. The family lived at ‘St Elmo’ Clarke St, Lilydale. He was the eldest son of William Joseph Sebire from Guernsey who arrived in Lilydale in 1871 when 30 years old. William was born in 1875 at the family home in Cave Hill road and attended Lilydale State School. He became a carpenter and builder. A great sportsman he played both football and cricket for Lilydale and was a great bowler and fieldsman. He was a former secretary and player in the Lilydale Brass Band; one of the first guarantors for Melba park and held all offices except presidency in the Lilydale Progress Association. He was a member of the Rechabite Lodge for 64 years and senior superintendent of the Junior Tent for 25 years. He was secretary of the State School Committee and was appointed “father” of the Higher Elementary School. He was secretary of the Lilydale Horticultural Society and a member of the Orient Lodge of Lilydale in 1907 in which he held various local and regional positons. We regret to announce the passing on Wednesday of an old and greatly respected friend in Mr William John Sebire, of Lilydale. Bill, as we’ve always known him, was undoubtedly the gentleman of Lilydale…His death at his home in Clarke St followed a long illness. Biography:
William was the younger brother of Henry Sebire. He was born at St Sampson, Guernsey in 1841 and was a pioneer at Wandin. He arrived in Melbourne in 1857 and after residing in Williamstown for three months before moving to Lilydale where he stayed for six years. He spent two years at Wagga Wagga befor e returning to Lilydale. In 1874 he married Mary Rihoy from Emerald Hill. They settled in Lilydale where he became a builder. William and Mary Ann had five children: William, Alfred, Emma, (Mrs Briggs), Albert and Arthur.

Death of Mr W. Sherlock
Mr W. Sherlock one of the oldest and best known railway employes in the district died very suddenly … from an attack of pneumonia, supervening on influenza… Deceased was 59 years of age and a ganger on the line between Lilydale and Croydon, and had earned an enviable reputation for the splendid manner in which he kept his length of track, being repeatedly awarded the prize for the best kept section. He was born at Blackburn and came to Mooroolbark 28 years ago…In his younger days he was a noted cricketer, and in the earlier days was a member of the Lilydale Cricket Club, and later was one of the pioneers of the game at Mooroolbark…Mrs Sherlock and a married family survives him. The death too place of Mr Hamilton Sinclair, at his residence, Castella St, Lilydale on Tuesday morning last. He has held the position of Shire secretary for the past six years, having come from Werribee, where he held the same position for about 20 years. Mr Sinclair had been suffering for the past 18 months, most of which time he has been confined to his bed. …. Biography:
Charles Slater lived in his home Gascoyne Villa, Main Street, Lilydale since 1877. He was born at Devonshire in 1823 and was 64 years old at the time of his death. He has lived in Victoria for 30years and had been chiefly occupied at foreman of his brother’s firm, Slater and Co, importers of telegraphic instrument and located in Collins St, Melbourne. When he arrived in Lilydale he took up farming. He had been ill the 12 months before his death. Cause of death was softening of the brain. [Lilydale Express 02-12-1887 pg2]

Biography:
John Slevin was the lease of the Black Springs Hotel in 1873 which he later secured freehold. After his death, his wife Ann and her daughters ran the hotel until they sold it in 1912 to Dr Scott. Slevin Street was named after their daughter Minnie Slevin who married Louis Deschamps, the owner of the land bounded by Cave Hill Road, Albert Hill Road and east of Kidgell Street. The land was sold in 1913 as the Olinda Estate subdivision and included the road names of Deschamps and Slevin. [What’s Behind the Name pg 34]

Obituary:
The news of the painfully sudden death on 21 inst. of Mr Joseph Smith came as a profound shock to the residents of Lilydale . . . As captain of the local fire brigade he had responded with a number of his men to a fire alarm at about 10pm at Cave Hill. The fire located in a stack of firewood at the lime kilns was overcome . . . they were returning home when Mr Smith staggered and fell to the ground . . . his comrades found by the glare of the torches that he was no more . . [He] was one of those popular young men who . . . had won himself an ever widening circle of friends . . . The erection of the fire alarm tower in Main St and the substantial building in Market Reserve are due principally to his energy and devotion as captain. [He] was also a prominent member of the hunt club, and a supporter of all branches of sport in the district . . . As recently as Tuesday Dr Adam advised him to abstain from the use of tobacco and all other forms of excitement. The funeral took place on Sunday when the remains were interred in [Lilydale] cemetery. The cortege comprised of 63 vehicles and 50 horsemen . . . and the fire bell was tolled. After the untimely death of her husband Isabella Smith continued operating the family’s butcher’s shop in Main Street opposite the Olinda Hotel.
In 1937 the people of Lilydale demonstrated in no uncertain terms the esteem and affection they felt for the late Mrs B. Smith, ‘this we learnt from a copy of the Express donated by an old resident’, tendering her a complimentary social evening on the eve of her retirement after 33 years active business life in the district … [Lilydale Express 07-05-1937 and 6-3-1959]

Mrs Isabella Therese Smith passed away after a long illness at the Bush Nursing Hospital on February 9th. Michael Smith
Inquest:
Mr Candler, the district coroner, held an inquest on 15th inst. at Brushy Creek on the body of Michael Smith, aged 43 years, a farmer living at Brushy Creek. Deceased was with a man in his employ, Charles Brunning, on the 13th driving bullocks drawing 2 tons of bark, and between the Black Springs and the deceased’s house Brunning went into a house leaving the deceased sitting on the pole of the bullock dray. Brunning came out a few minutes and found the deceased lying dead on his face in the road. The wheel of the dray had passed over his back. The deceased was not intoxicated and the road was a level one. Dr Elmes, who examined the body externally, found a mark such as a wheel would make on the back. Several ribs were crushed in. Death appeared to have been caused by internal injuries such as pressure on the chest would produce. A verdict of accidental death was found. [The Argus 18-01-1873 p1]

The news of the death of Mr John Stephenson, of Castella Street, Lilydale on Wednesday, was received by all who knew him with the utmost feeling of regret, more particularly as by his removal he leaves a family of six daughter orphans. Up to a week ago the deceased, who was working with Messrs Harman and Nottingham, painting and repairing the Rechabite Hall, appeared, considering his age, 69 years, quite hale and hearty. Obituary:
The deceased lady had lived here (Castella St) all her life, being the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Stephenson, who rank among the earliest pioneers of the district, the former following the occupation of builder and contractor. On the death of her parents, over 20 years ago, the responsibility of caring for her four younger sisters devolved upon the deceased, and never has such a family trust fallen upon more worthy shoulders. She devoted herself wholly and unrestrainedly to the care of others, which, to a disposition such as hers, afforded her that rare happiness that can only be experienced by those whose life has been one of devotion and self-sacrifice. In latter years, after marriage had claimed her sisters, Miss Stephenson’s kindly and generous nature was manifested in many ways, and her memory will long be cherished by those intimately associated with her. Her long illness was borne with that marked cheerful attitude which marked the whole of her life. Her sisters (Mesdames C.H. Reakes, F. Dawes and Sone, and Miss D. Dolphin [should be F. Dolphin and H. Dolphin]) have received many evidences of the respect and esteem in which the deceased was held [Lilydale Express September 8, 1933 pg 2]

Biography:
Obituary Notice – The Late Mr M Supple
Michael Supple left Dublin with his parents during the Crimean War (1853-1856) and lived at first in Balwyn with the Glennons (Supple senior’s sister) and then Mitcham where his father and brothers carried on blacksmithing. Michael then left the family home and settled in Yering where he was employed by Paul de Castella and then Baron de Pury. He married Isabella Younger and they had five daughters and two sons. Mr Supple, of ‘The Pines’ died after being thrown from his horse while returning home after a visit to inspect his Stringy Bark property. [Lilydale Express 04-02-1898]

The death occurred on Friday night, September 18, of Mrs Isabella Supple, of Coldstream, at the age of 79 years. The funeral took place on Monday, the remains being followed by a very large number of relatives and friends to the Lilydale Cemetery. [Lilydale Express 23-09-1925]
Mary Ann (Minnie) Supple
Biography:
Mary Ann known as Minnie was the eldest child of Michael and Isabella (Younger) Supple. Minnie was born at Yering on March 9, 1866 was the eldest child. She was a very active person and involved in local activities such as the Yarra Glen Hunt and Lilydale Hunt Club and was secretary of the Coldstream Red Cross led by Dame Nellie Melba. Throughout World War I and the 1920, Minnie was involved in organising functions for the wounded soldiers from the Caulfield Hospital. [Melba and her Mates pg9]
