Isobella Macintyre was the daughter of Thomas Macintyre and Jane nee Burn and was born at Westernport in about 1836.

Obituary:
Mrs H. Parfitt – there passed away on June 9th a very old resident of Yering in the person of the late Mrs Parfitt at the age of 72. For several years past she had been practically laid aside by illness and had been compelled to lead a secluded existence….Our sympathy to Mr Parfitt who about 50 years ago was Church of England stipendiary reader of this district….[She] was formerly Miss Macintyre…..one of the oldest families in the district….A memorial service will be held at Yering State School….the place of interment being Lilydale cemetery…..[Lilydale Express 16-06-1911]

Primus Gilbert Parfitt – news of the death of the only son of Mr Henry Parfitt of ‘Olinda’ Yering….much loved by many friends….[He] was born February 10th, 1872….and regularly attended Black Springs State school…..moving to Yering with his parents in 1876…..[He] left school at 15 – helping with work around the home…..years ago he underwent an operation, followed by several others…..a few weeks ago he was sent to Dr Stirling’s private hospital…..[Lilydale Express 26-01- 1912]
Henry Parfitt
Biography:
Born about 1833 at Trowbridge Wiltshire, Henry was the son of Samuel Saunders Spalding Parfitt and Emma Deacon. He married Isobella Macintyre who was born about 1836 at Westernport. They had Primus Gilbert Parfitt b 1872 at Lilydale and adop ted Mary Ethel (nee Mary Ellen Corr born 1886 in Melbourne). By 1872 the family were at Black Springs and on July 9, 1876 they had moved to Yering. [LDHS files]

News of the sudden death of Mr William Park of the Sportsman’s Arms Hotel, Coldstream….was received with widespread regret….He was only ill for two days….His remains were interred at Lilydale cemetery on Thursday, the members of the M.U.I.O.O.F. marching in front of the hearse…[he] was born and brought up at Coldstream, the youngest of a family of 21 children, and his mother Mrs Park sen. survives him. He married Miss Elizabeth Fulton daughter of Andrew Fulton of ‘The Towers’….He leaves a widow two daughters and one son….An enthusiastic cricketer and huntsman, and a member of the original Yarra Glen Hunt Club. The death took place on Monday last, at her daughter’s (Mrs G. Whelan) residence, Castella St Lilydale, of Mrs Elizabeth Park, widow of the late William Park of Coldstream. Florence (Flo) Parker was born at Gayndah, Queensland on September 5, 1864. She was the daughter of Robert Chisholm Watson of Carlisle Cumberland, England and Queensland, and Margaret Izett of Glasgow, Scotland and Prahran. ….residents….were grieved to hear of the death of one of the earliest settlers of Silvan, in the person of Mrs Florence Parker, at the age of 64 years….Deceased was the daughter of Mrs and the daughter of Mrs and the late Mr Watson of Prahran, and upon her marriage 43 years ago, came to reside at South Silvan on a portion of the vast area originally selected by her husband’s father. During that long period the Parker family took an active part in all social and progressive movements in the district. William James Parker
Biography:
William (Will) was born at Collingwood in 1863. He was the son of George Walter Parker and Ann Hampton Wiseman. On March 16, 1887 he married Florence (Flo) Watson in the Presbyterian Church, Toorak. William died in Melbourne on August 2, 1941. [silvanpioneers.blogspot.com.au]
Obituary:
The death of a very old resident of Silvan, Mr William James Parker, aged 78 years, occurred at Kew on Saturday, August 2….For a long period he was the mail contractor between Silvan and Lilydale, and was one of the few aspirants for municipal honors to contest the Wandin seat against Cr. Wallace when first elected. His parents were among the very earliest settlers in the South Wandin district, migrating there when deceased was nine years of age.
The family and relatives had holdings of 1000 acres when the land was mostly over-run with wild pigs, where were afterwards captured and sold at Lilydale. Their home was renowned for numerous deserting seamen who found their way there, mostly to be given employment. Mr Parker and his brothers-in- law, Messrs Wisenman, on their own initiative and at their own expense, inaugurated a reformatory for recalcitrant youths, which was freely availed of by parents of youths in need of firm control. Deceased leaves a family comprising Harold, Hilda (Mrs W. Lewis, Blackburn), Leslie (Kew), and Florence (Mrs Elsworth, Balwyn)….[Lilydale Express 15-08-1941 pg3]

Biography:
Andrew Paul died at his Mooroolbark residence and was a native of Linlithgow, Scotland. He had resided in Calcutta, as a merchant, for 25 years and came to Melbourne in 1853. He brought with him two Arab stallions worth a large sum of money having won a number of races in India. He bought land at Mooroolbark and resided there all the rest of his life. Andrew married twice and by his first marriage to Helen Amour (who died 13-06-1864) he had three daughters and two sons – Mrs. E. Poyner, of Lilydale, Mrs. T. Hill of Gruyere, Mrs. Kay of Scotland, Mr. H.W. Paul, Secretary of Lillydale Shire, and Mr. A. Paul of Hawthorn. He married Johana and had two sons – Joseph and Edward Paul. Henry William Paul (junior)
Biography:
Henry was born at Mooroolbark on 13-04-1867, the second child and eldest son of Henry William and Jane (nee Grey) Paul. He died of English cholera at Hawthorn on 01-05-1883. [[Taped interview Dorothy Anst (nee Paul)]
Henry William Paul
Biography:
Mr Henry William Paul died at the home of his son Edward Armour Paul. He was born in Calcutta and with his parents went to Scotland and at age 4 attended school and later worked for seven years in Glasgow. Later he married Janet Bennett at Cambus, Scotland on 03-07-1857. Janet was born at Cambus on 29-03-1835. They had two children:
1.Janet born at Alloa on 16-03-1858 who later came to Australia with her father; and
2.Helen Armour born at Glasgow 09-09-1859 but died on 24-07-1860 from teething complications.
Henry’s wife Janet died on 22-02-1860 at Cambus.
With his surviving daughter Janet (later Mrs John McGhee) sailed for Australia on Elizabeth Ann Bright. He joined his father (Andrew Paul) and Edward Moore Poyner who were contractors in the district. In 1864 Henry married Jane Gray and they had eight children. Henry and Jane bought 40 acres at Yering which he named Cambus, where the family lived. In 1874 he was appointed Secretary of the Shire of Lilydale and the next year had the role of Rate Collector added to his responsibilities. He served the shire until 1897 when his failing eyesight forced him to retired as Shire Secretary. However, he continued to be the rate collector until 1903 when he retired. Biography:
At Melbourne on 04-10-1864 Henry married Jane Gray who was born at Millfield, Northumberland, England on 22-05-1834. They had eight children: Mary Helen born 1865; Henry William born 1867; Andrew Grey born 1868; Edward Armour born 14-11-1869; Jane Gray born 16-08-1871; Isabella Margaret born 19-08-1873; Gilbert Andrew born 06-01-1877 and David Alexander born 13-01-1880. Biography:
Thomas William James Turner, born Hotham 1884, was the eldest son of Thomas Turner and Sarah (Parr) Turner who were very early settlers who built a home at the corner of the present day Liverpool and Mr Dandenong roads in Kilsyth. The front of the site became the Kilsyth general store and post office and is today (2014) the site of the Kilsyth Vet. No information on Thomas Turner. Sarah Parr was the daughter of William Parr and Jane Axford who were early settlers of Croydon. Thomas Knee married Sarah Hardidge, the daughter of Samuel of Croydon. They had 13 children. In his Will dated April 28 1920, he left real estate valued at 2,615 pounds and personal property valued at 243 pounds to his widow and children. [The Argus 22-09-1920 pg2]

Another of Lilydale’s old and respected identities passed away last Monday morning in the person of Mrs Peden. Known to most inhabitants of the town, this elderly lady, aged 83 years, was regarded with affection and esteem, being possessed of a kindly and generous disposition. For the last three months he accustomed good health seemed to be on the wane. ….she expired peacefully being lovingly ministered to the last by her family. Obituary:
Mr John Peden – a resident of Lilydale for many years died at Lilydale hospital on July 14 at the age of 65. The late Mr Peden arrived in Victoria in 1921 and for some time was engaged at Cave Hill relinquishing that position to take charge of H. Thompson’s dairy farm at Gruyere, to whom he was related. Strange to say, he was not connected with the well-known local family of the same name but emigrated from the same county in the north of Ireland… [Lilydale Express 21-07-1939 pg 3]

Obituary:
A Shocking fatality young boy electrocuted When the electric current cut off peremptorily at about 5.50 last Friday evening, most people accepted the happening philosophically, as such occurrences are by no means rare in Lilydale. Stark tragedy, however was lurking in the beyond, and a few moments later it became known that Robert Macalister Pender, a boy of 4 years and 10 months, the youngest son of Mr and Mrs R.M. Pender, of Silvan, had been electrocuted.
The boy had been playing in the yard of the crown Hotel, a few doors from his mother’s shop with Patricia Morris, the six-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs E.F. Morris. In their play the children had climbed onto the roof of the washhouse, but, being notice by the cook, were told to get down. This they did, but a few moments later they had got up on the roof again, and the boy had contrived to come into contact with an uninsulated portion of the live wire attached to the roof of the building. The alarm was quickly given, and medical aid and the police were summoned. Meanwhile Mr F. Benyan, who had been working on the premises, procured a pair of rubber gloves from the fire station, and Mr Morris detached the unfortunate boy from the wire. Dr McMahon arrived on the scene in quick time, and immediately the boy was freed he began an endeavour to restore life by resuscitation methods.
A little later he was joined by Dr Short, and the two, with Mrs Short, made a valiant effort to bring life into the young boy’s body again. For about two hours they worked incessantly, but to no avail. This tragedy is the culminating point of a series of misfortunes experienced by Mr and Mrs Pender, and heartfelt sympathy is felt on all sides. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon at the Lilydale cemetery, the Revs. H.G. White (Lilydale) and A.J. White (Croydon) conducted the last rites of the church of England at the graveside. Inquest:
J.B. Cathcart J.P. conducted the inquest and heard evidence from Mr Pender, Patricia Morris, the Crown Hotel cook-general May Martin, Fred Benyan, State Electricity Commission’s Frederick Edwards, Dr Frank Fitzroy McMahon and Mounted-constable Eldridge. The verdict was: That death was the result of shock through coming in contact with a live electric wire, no blame being attachable to anybody. [Lilydale Express 15-08-1930 pg 1]

Frederick was born at Carlton Victoria and enlisted in World War I at Melbourne. His father was John Penrice and when he enlisted he gave his occupation as orchard worker from Box Hill. He was single. He served with 44th Battalion from June to December 1916; 2nd Pioneer Battalion June 1916 to May 1917.

Henry Perrin
Biography:
Henry Perrin died suddenly, following inflammation of the lungs. He was aged 61. He was born in Kent in 1825 and at age 17 he entered East India Company’s service, where he remained for 20 years serving as a pilot. He had a severe time of it and a pension still received from the company will continue to the widow. He returned to England before leaving for Australia. On coming to Melbourne he sold drapery to Upper Yarra and Lilydale settlers. In 1860 he settled in Lilydale and from 1861 he was postmaster, a position which his son now retains. He was also a newsagent and shire councillor and was responsible for the erection of the Baptist Tabernacle. He started the Lilydale Express with the first impression of the first issue of the paper taken by him. [Lilydale Express 29-09-1886]
Charles Andrew Perrin
Biography:
Charles was the third child of Henry and Cecelia Perrin and was born at Calcutta on 16-11-1851. He arrived at Lilydale in 1861 with his parents, Harriet Amelia and brother Frederick Walter. In 1872 he married Maryanna Bailey who later established a fancy repository and gift depot in Main St Lilydale.
He died from typhoid fever. He was a brother of the local postmaster and leaves a widow and four children. His remains were interred in Lilydale cemetery, the cortege being a lengthy one. Rev. J. L. Cecelia Perrin
Biography:
Cecilia Perrin was born in Calcutta in 1828 and at 18 married the late Mr Henry Perrin, then pilot in East India Company in which he served 22 years, retiring on a good pension. Mrs Perrin remained in Calcutta for a few years after marriage then went to England for a few years before arriving in Australia around 1857 and settling in Melbourne, before moving to Lilydale around 1860. She was very retiring in life owing in chiefly to her affliction which caused her much suffering for the last 24 years, during which time she displayed and exemplary patience and resignation. She had nursed her daughter (Mrs Thomas) through influenza and then contracted inflammation in her own leg resulting in gangrene. She was the daughter of Mr W. Spence, pilot East India Company service, Calcutta where one sister and one brother are now living. [Lilydale Express 28-07-1893]

Death of Mr F. W. Perrin
Residents of Lilydale and district were deeply grieved to learn of the death of Mr Perrin on Friday last. The name of Perrin ranks prominently among those of the early settlers in these parts. In the days when bullock waggons and the Royal Mail coach were familiar means of transport the local postal facilities were administered by the parents of deceased, who, later resumed the duties in the Main St premises now occupied by Mrs Kentish. In recent years Mr Perrin, 76, has lived a retired life at Kew, but, with his wife was a frequent visitor to Lilydale . . . . on the day prior to his death he attended the funeral for Dame Nellie Melba . . . he delighted in long walks and his last was from Box Hill to Kew, after returning from Lilydale on Thursday . . on Friday he collapsed at Hampton while visiting his holidaying son, Osmond. Death was due to heart failure. The remains were interred at Lilydale cemetery on Saturday the Rev. J. J. Proctor officiating. Biography:
Mrs G. Plain, wife of the Lilydale storekeeper had suffered for several years with cancer. She was born Galston, Scotland in 1845, arrived Victoria 1854. She resided in Abbotsford for a number of years being a prominent member of the Gipps Street Wesleyan Church. In June 1882 she married Mr Plain and came to reside permanently in Lilydale. She entered heartily into all work connected with the Methodist Church and was a leading member of the W. C. T. U. Her brother arrived from Sydney and walked from Kew to try and see her before she died, but was too late. The funeral hearse was followed by 44 vehicles and several horseman, one of the largest corteges to pass through Lilydale. The coffin was covered with many beautiful tributes which the newspaper listed. [Lilydale Express 17-11-1893]

Biography:
The Poyner family patriarch and former stone mason, Edward Poyner was born on May 29, 1833 in Shropshire England. He arrived in Lilydale in 1857 with 40 shillings in his pocket. But less than 20 years later in 1876 he owned 33 acres bounded by Mt Olinda and the Bald Hills, near the Maroondah Highway…it was there he built his dream home ‘The Oaks’….In the same year he arrived in Australia Mr Poyner married Helen Marion Paul from the East Indies, at St John’s Church, Heidelberg. They had five children….He bought a Gruyere property naming it ‘Black Muster’….He [later] built a row of shops in Clarke St, Lilydale, with some still standing today….He founded the Lilydale Cricket Club and served as a member of the Upper Yarra District Road Board (the forerunner of the Shire of Lillydale) from 1867 to 1870. A park and street in Lilydale are named after the family which celebrated 150 years in Australia in June, 2007. [Lilydale Leader July 2007]
Obituary:
Edward Moore Poyner died of cancer at his home “The Oaks”. After arriving in Victoria he stayed at Heidelberg before moving to Lilydale to work for Paul de Castella and later Mr Harker. He purchased 320 acres at Gruyere which he sold in 1876. In 1872 he purchased property at Lilydale he named “The Oaks” and built his brick home. He started a bakery in Main St, Lilydale which he sold to Messrs Strachan in 1886 and retired from active life. [Lilydale Express, 14-04-1894]

Biography:
Helen (Paul) Poyner was born in Calcutta, India on September 2, 1842, the daughter of Andrew Paul and Helen Armour her family arrived in Australia when she was 10. Her brother Henry Paul who was the Shire of Lillydale secretary/rate collector from 1875 to 1897. She married Edward Moore Poyner at St John’s Church Heidelberg on January 3, 1858 and the couple moved to Lilydale. At the time, there were only three homes and blacksmith’s shop in Lilydale. After the death of her husband, Mrs Poyner remained at “The Oaks” for some years before moving to Cave Hill Rd. [Lilydale Express 08-09-1922]

Mrs J. Pretty – we record the death of the beloved wife of Mr. J. Pretty, storekeeper of Seymour, and third daughter of Mr and Mrs G. A. Burton, of this town, at 36. [She] came to Lilydale with her parents about 14 years ago. . . . took an active part in church work, a member of the Lilydale Methodist Church choir. [She] married Mr Pretty who was employed at Dawborn, Morey and Co. Subsequently Mr Pretty managed a Yarra Glen branch store, later taking charge of a Broadford store for Mr B. Dawborn. . . . Biography:
A large company followed the remains of Mrs Emily Alice Proctor, wife of the Rev. J. J. Proctor, to the Lilydale cemetery. The deceased lady who was aged 67 was born at Richmond. At aged 16 she moved to Ballarat, becoming associated with Barclay Street Methodist Church and volunteering as a missionary sister for service in New Guinea where she spent two years. Marrying 29 years ago, she has one daughter Alice…The family came to Wandin and moved to Lilydale 8 years ago where Mrs Proctor was associated with every good work. Six months ago she became an invalid. Rev. Dr F. J. Wilkins, an intimate friend, conducted the services. Pallbearers were J. Hutchinson, C. H. Perrin, Col. Osborne and Rev. H. C. Kent. Biography:
With her husband Margaret Quayle operated the Wandin Yallock post office and arrived in the district 18 years before her death. She took a keen interest in the church and Sunday school and was a regular worshipper at the Methodist Church. She had suffered pain for many years but took ill a two weeks before her death. She took to her bed but the oppressive weather and her low state of health led to her demise. She was 69 years old. Messrs Bailey & Burton carried out the arrangements. Members of the Wandin Rechabite Tent of which Mr Quayle was a member, marched in the procession to the Lilydale cemetery. [Lilydale Express 21-02-1896 pg2]
Thomas Quayle
Biography:
Thomas Quayle was a Manxman and was born 28-08-1828 at Douglas. He emigrated to Australia with wife Margaret (nee Myles) and daughter Jane on the Stebonheath arriving at Williamstown 16.12.1851. He later purchased a team of horses and large covered transport wagon and contracted to deliver supplies to the goldfields. He later established an orchard at Heidelberg. In 1866 he selected 80 acres in Wandin where as well as fruit growing he opened a store, later conducting the Wandin Yallock post officeat the corner of Beenak and Quayle roads. In 1879 he founded the Hope of Wandin Tent No 246, I.O.R. The family were active members of the Methodist church. Mrs Quayle predeceased her husband by six weeks. They had a family of 3 sons – Thomas, William and Frederick, and 4 daughters – Jane (Mrs Webb), Margaret (Mrs Couch), Elizabeth and Frances (Mrs W. J. Sebire). Obituary:
We regret to have to record the death of Mr Thomas Quayle, which sad event took place at his residence on Sunday morning last. Mr Quayle had been in failing health for some time past, and succumbed to heart disease. The funeral took place on Tuesday, the remains being interred in the Lilydale cemetery.
