Obituary:

A sensational stir was caused in Lilydale when news came that a young man, Gordon Terry, residing in Pine Grove, had been electrocuted. Doris Terry came into contact with a live wire lying in their garden and on hearing her screams, her brother, Gordon, rushed out to assist, but became entangled in the wire and was killed instantly . . Investigation showed the wire which caused the fatality was the telephone that had been disconnected and had in some manner come into contact with the electric light wire and, not being insulated, at once became an agent of death. Miss Terry received a severe shock and burnt finger . . The coroner gave the order for burial and the large funeral took place at Lilydale. Gordon Terry was held in high esteem by many. Members of the Oddfellows Lodge, of which he was a member, headed the cortege and performed the lodge last rites . . Rev. W. J. Bottoms read the Methodist burial service at the graveside . . Sincere sympathy to Mrs Terry and family [Lilydale Express 31-10-1924]

Biography:

At the time of his death, William had been in delicate health. Aged 59 he was the third son of John Towt of Booroondara and was born at Brighton in 1853. After attending Brighton Grammar School, William inspected various properties throughout New South Wales and Victoria before purchasing the “Devon Park” estate from the later Robert Blair. In 1876 he married Margaret McNab, the daughter of Duncan McNab of “Greenpoint” Yering. Having been reared on a farm and having good experience with cattle, he devoted himself to grazing and farming and breeding pure Ayrshire cattle. He was fond of horses and in the earlier days raced his own. He was a good huntsman and strongly supported the local Hunt Club. He was also a member of the Lilydale Agricultural and Pastoral Society and won many prizes exhibiting cattle and horses at the Royal and district shows. Mr Towt had an inventive mind and some years ago he invented the “Dreadnought Wire Strainer” which met with much success in the Commonwealth, New Zealand and South Africa. He is survived by his widow, four sons and two daughters. His second son Leslie died in Perth in 1906.
