Obituary:

The death took place at Lilydale on Wednesday last of Mr Richard Black (should be Nicholls), an old and respected resident at the aged of 81 years. The late Mr Black leaves a grown-up family of five sons and five daughters, with whom sympathy is felt in their bereavement. [Lilydale Express 29-01-1915 pg2]

Correction:

In our last issue we inadvertently mentioned the name of Mr Richard Black as having died on 27th January at Lilydale. The name should have read Mr Richard Nicholls, of Black St, Lilydale. [ Lilydale Express 05-02-1915]

Biography:

Obituary:

We regret to announce the sudden death of Mr John Nicholson, at his residence, Temora, on Tuesday evening…..death to have resulted from apoplexy…..Mr Nicholson was 43 years of aged, and was a son of the late Hon. William Nicholson, a former premier of the colony, who was known as “the father of the ballot.” The decease gentleman was at one time very well off, and owned Cave Hill, now the property of Mr D. Mitchell. He was also a former shire councillor of Lilydale. He leaves a widow and one daughter. [Lilydale Express 23-09-1887 pg 2]

Henry Robert Overton

Death notice:

The eight weeks old son of Mr and Mrs Overton, of Baker Rd, Wandin, died suddenly on Monday morning. No reason could be given by the parents for their child’s death and the matter was reported to the Lilydale police. On Wednesday, Dr Adam made a post mortem examination of the body and found death was due to congestion of the lungs. A verdict to that effect was returned at an enquiry held before Mr H. Hughes, JP. George Overton

Biography:

George Edmund Overton was born in or near Melbourne in 1850. He was the son of William Overton who arrived from Tasmania in 1838 to open the colony’s first confectionery shop in a hut in Collins St. William was one of the first to install a private gas plant to light his premises and formed the first gaslight company in the city. In 1875 George Edmund selected land in Queens Rd near Beenak Rd, Wandin. He married Miss Mary Jane Parr and was a fruit and flower grower, cricketer and councillor. He served on the Shire of Lillydale Council from1890 to 1896 and was Shire president in 1893. He died in 1936 aged 86 leaving three daughters Beatrice, Gertrude and Florence and three sons George, Ernest and Arthur. [Wandin, its origins and early development]

Obituary:

Wandin pioneer passes. On Sunday last sincere sympathy was felt for the Overton family, when the death of their esteemed father was reported. Deceased had reached the advanced age of 86 years . . . His recent health had prepared his family for the worst. [He] arrived in the district when quite a young man, later marrying the daughter of the late Mr Parr, a neighbouring settler, and rearing a family of three sons and two daughters. . . For nine years he represented the East Riding ratepayers in the council. The family is among the most respected in the district. . . fully evidenced by the large cortege that followed the remains to Lilydale cemetery on Monday, the shire council being represented by Crs. Ernest Alfred Overton

Biography:

The son of George and Mary Overton, at the time of his death, Ernest was aged 65 years. His wife Eleanor Nellie had died in November 1913. He is survived by two daughters Mrs A. Whyte (Beatrice) and Mrs Rouget (Elenor); two sisters Gertrude and Florence, and a brother Arthur. [Lilydale Express 31-10-1947]

Obituary:

Wandin loses old identity. Passing of Ernest Alfred Overton. Many attended the funeral of [this] respected citizen and old identity of the Wandin district, who passed away at Wandin North on October 25. . . a native of Wandin and one of the most respected residents of the district . . beloved to all associated with him, in business circles and on the sporting field . . The funeral left his residence for Lilydale cemetery . . A son of the early pioneering Overton family, Ernest was for many years the backbone of the Wandin Cricket Club . . . he took a keen interest in other sporting activities . . . his favourite past-time was shooting and fishing. His accuracy with the rifle, particularly in kangaroo hunts, stamped him as a master cracksman. Later in life he was compelled to retire from his fruit agency business through ill health.
