Biography:

Herbert Stevens Kay was 48 years old when he died after a short illness of influenza and pneumonia. For the past five or six years the deceased gentleman held the position of head clerk for Mr David Mitchell at Lilydale, and with his employer and fellow employees he was held in very high regard. About 50 Lilydale employees of Mr Mitchell as a tribute of respect marched at the head of the cortege from Cave Hill to the Cemetery. Rev H.M Burns conducted the service. Biography:

At the time of his death, David Kay was the manager of Lilydale branch of Colonial Bank of Australasia. Aged 50, he had served with the Colonial Bank of Australasia for 32 years, being a manger for the last 27 years. He was born in Portland and joined the branch there when 18 years old. Branches he worked at included: Dunkeld, Apsley, St Arnaud, and Lilydale where he had been the manager for 17 years. About 1899 he married Mary Jane Moore Black, the eldest daughter of Robert Black of Cooring Yering. His funeral was led by Lilydale Brass Band, Lilydale Fire Brigade, Orient (Lilydale) Lodge of Freemasons. There were 46 vehicles and 15 horsemen extended for a quarter of a mile. Mary Jane Moore Kay

Biography:

Mary Jane was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Black of ‘Cooring’ and was born at Coldstream in 1872. She attended the local school and finished her education at Parkville Ladies College. In 1894 she visited Ireland with her parents and in 1899 she married David Kay. After his death in 1909 Mary moved back home with her parents. She was described as being quiet, unassuming and had a kindly disposition. She was so socked at her husband’s death that she never really got over her grief. The couple did not have children. Arthur Peter Keenan

Obituary:

A member of the well known Keenan family, Mr Arthur Keenan died in Melbourne last Saturday at the age of 76 years. Connected with the development of Lilydale for over 50 years, this family came from Mitcham on the opening of the Lilydale railway. As a young many Arthur was a prominent local footballer and runner. His prowess on the football field may be gauged by the fact that a short time back a football medallion was sent to the “Sun-Pictoria” as wanting an owner. It turned out to be a medal presented to the late Mr Kennan some time in the ‘nineties by Cr James Wallace.

In the days when sport called for every member of the community to do his bit, the Keenan family were renowned for step dancing, championship wood cutting, achievement on the football field in most pastimes of the old century when “Shank’s” pony and a stout gig and pony were in evidence, long since superseded by the motor car. At the regular old-time dances, too, they carved a niche form themselves by discoursing pleasant melodies per medium of the concertina. The late Mr Keenan leaves a daughter, Mrs W. McCumber of Swansea Rd to whom sympathy is extended. [Lilydale Express 02-02-1940]

The sad death occurred this week at Bairnsdale of Mr Valentine Kelly, well known in this (Healesville) district, where his family still reside. Death resulted from a severe attack of pneumonia. Another very old resident of the Healesville district, Mr Michael Kelly, passed away at his residence, Healesville, on Monday morning last. The late Mr Kelly, who had lived at Healesville for 35 years and was 86, been ailing for 12 months and had been confined to his bed during the past three months. . . The funeral, a large one . . . took place at Lilydale Cemetery, the Rev. Father O’Brien officiating. Biography:

Allan Sebastian Kentish was born 01-02-1865 at Mitcham, South Australia. He married Ada Webb, born on the 28-11-1864, on 04-05-1904. They had one daughter Olive Florence born 24-10-1906 and married Edward Watkins at Mt Evelyn on 04-03-1933. They had three children: Graeme, Gwenda and Allan. The society also holds a collection of boot repair tools used in his bootmaker shop which he operated in Main Street, Lilydale. [LDHS files]

Obituary:

We regret to record the death of Mr T. A. Kentish, which occurred at his residence, Main St Lilydale . . . on Thursday morning. He had been ailing for some time past. Mr Kentish was of retiring disposition, but highly respected and esteemed by his more intimate friends. Obituary:

Death of Mrs Kerr. – Another very old resident of the district in the person of Mrs Kerr, of “Olinda Yarra” Yering passed away on Monday, August 5th. Mrs Kerr came to this district over 50 years ago with her husband Mr John Kerr, and they were amongst the pioneers. The funeral took place on Wednesday, August 7 to the Lilydale Cemetery, and was very largely attended. Rev W. Biography:

Born in Ireland in 1835, John Kerr and his friend Robert Black arrived in Victoria in 1857. Both had been medical students but set out in search of gold, which took them to Queensland and New South Wales where they were most successful.
They returned to Lilydale where they farmed together, first leasing land later purchasing 500 acres north of Lilydale. After a 10-year business relationship they decided to go their separate ways.
In 1870 John married Elizabeth Macintyre (daughter of Thomas Macintyre) and they had 10 children. John purchased 1,500 acres of semi swamp land on the river flats near Yarra Glen, which he drained and successfully grew good pasture to feed his large dairy herd. By 1880 he had milking sheds covering about a quarter of an acre and a staff of 17 to help send 200 gallons of milk to Melbourne daily.
The property was a showpiece in the district. The installation of an electric plant in 1912 made the property one of the most up-to-date at the time. Outside of farming John was active in the community. He was a member of the Upper Yarra District Road Board joining in 1871; a founding member of the Lilydale Presbyterian Church; he founded the Lilydale Tent of Rechabites in 1869. John died in December 1927 aged 92 years. [A Tour of Lilydale Cemetery Book 3pg13]

Memorial Address:

A memorial address was given for John Kerr by Rev Robertson at the Lilydale Presbyterian Church. John Kerr…was the oldest pioneer of the district and also the oldest elder of the church. Mr Kerr was at one time a member of the Lillydale Shire Council, and in his younger days took a keen interest in the welfare of the district…He was a man of great force of character and natural ability. But he was also something better, for he was a man of high moral principle and unswerving rectitude. In the early days, when the cause was not so popular as it is today, he was one of the leaders in the temperance movement and the prime mover in the foundation of the local Rechabite Lodge. Above all, he was a loyal member of the church and a staunch supporter of the cause. We think of him to-day as the last of the pioneers of the district and one who by his patience and industry and sturdy independence ‘made good’ in the highest sense. [Lilydale Express 23-12-1927]

Margaret Kiernan

Obituary:

Another gap in the ranks of the early pioneers of this district was made by the death of Mrs Margaret Kiernan at her Gruyere residence on Sunday last. [She] came to the district over 40 years ago, where with her late husband she followed rural pursuits. She was 92 . . A son and three daughters are left to mourn. The eldest, Michael Joseph, is attached to the detective force as sergeant and is stationed at Geelong. Mrs Burgi (wife of the late Cr. In a lengthy report the Lilydale Express which focussed on the Eulogy delivered at the graveside by Rev J.R. Anderson M.A. But it did record that Margaret was the wife of Robert Kilpatrick and mother of Dr William Kilpatrick J.P. Her funeral left her son’s home “Yarra Lea”, Lilydale and the mourner included local people and friends from Melbourne, Colac, Yarra Glen, Kangaroo Ground, Eltham and Healesville. Biography:

Richard Tamplin Kings was born 24-6-1833 at Gloucester, England. He came to Melbourne in 1853 settling at Alphington. He married Ann Eliza Borley on 10-9-1859. In 1863 he commenced a butchering business at Lilydale when there was only 4 dwellings in the town….Mr Kings was the first to build a brick house in Lilydale, also running a butchering and baking establishment at Hoddles Creek. He was a member of the Lilydale and Warburton Railway Trust, the Lilydale Water Trust. the cemetery trust and St John’s Church………He was shire councillor from 1888-1901 and 1908 until his death in 1914…..at 71 he studied and obtained a veterinary degree. Obituary:

On Friday, May 8, 1914 Cr Kings sat on the bench at the Lilydale Court before going to Melbourne. As the Lilydale Express recorded: “He attended a meeting of veterinary surgeons in the evening, and whilst in conversation with Mr Kendall, and in the act of lighting a cigar he leaned back and expired. “In controversial matters he was very tenacious and stubborn, and the man who assumed he could be silenced in an argument, invariably found that he had “struck a snag.” However of a seemingly hard nature there was a tender chord and he did a great deal of good without displaying any ostentation. Mr Kings was a hard worker, and can be truly said that he died in harness.” He left a wife and grown-up family of five sons and one daughter. [Lilydale Express 15-05-1914]

…we record the death of Mr John Kitchingham, which took place at his residence, Surrey Hills, on Wednesday, 29th ult. The deceased gentleman has been well known in the Lilydale district, having visited it at intervals for the past 25 years. About 12 years ago he became the licensee of the Olinda Hotel, Lilydale, which business he conducted until the later Mr D. Baker secured the lease. Mr Kitchingham was the owner of the new Crown Hotel, and also of the magnificent block of land situated at the corner of Clark and Main streets, Lilydale. He made many friends in the Lilydale district by his kind and genial manner, and his demise is deeply regretted…There was only a very small attendance of local residents at the funeral, but this was caused through the short notice of the funeral being given. William George Knee

William George Knee, the son of Thomas and Sarah of Yarra Road, Croydon was born 21-07-1886. He married Mary Elizabeth Cook and they had seven children: Charles, Kathleen, Frederick, Ruth, John, Peter and Miriam.

William served with the 59th Battalion of the A.I.F. in World War 1 and died on 01-12-1976 in the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital aged 90 years. [Glynis Hughes, William’s grand-daughter]

John Burgi

Biography:

Johann Burgi was born at Berne, Switzerland on January 4, 1824 and emigrated to Victoria in 1854. He worked in vineyards at Lilydale, sometimes employed by Hubert de Castella. He married Mary Tyne January 1864 in Yering and selected land in Victoria Rd Wandin in 1866. Mary ad Johann had 10 children: Edmund, Mary Ellen (Mrs L. Kolling), Anna (Mrs B. Magee), Emma, John, Samuel, Catherine (Mrs Alfred Meier) and Lily (Mrs Albert Meier). Two others died in infancy. [Wandin its origins and early development and Lilydale Cemetery tours. Vol. 3]

Obituary:

Many residents will learn with deep sorrow of the death of one of the pioneers of Wandin, Mr John Burgi, who passed away at his residence Seville on Tuesday last aged 80 . . He leaves a wife and grown-up family of two daughters and three sons . . The funeral took place yesterday when the remains were interred in the Lilydale cemetery. Rev. R. G. Biography:

Mary Tyne married Johann Burgi at Christ’s Church Yering on January 26, 1864. Mary had arrived from Tipperary, Ireland as an assisted migrant in June 1863.

Biography:

Mable was the daughter of Christopher Thomas Briggs and Maria Briggs and died after a shocking accident at her home at Silvan. Mable and her husband Charles Knoll had just returned in a motor waggon from the city and she has opened the garage door and was leaning against it to hold it open so her husband could drive the vehicle in. A sudden gust of wind caused her to lose balance and fall in front of the vehicle which passed over her head causing instant death. The police and Dr Short were immediately notified by Mr Knoll . .
