William Hand arrived in Melbourne with his family on board the Andromache in June 1840.

Obituary:

We regret to announce the death of Mr William Hand which occurred at the residence of his son Mr Henry Hand. He was a native of Nottinghamshire and arrived in this colony in 1840. After residing in Melbourne for some years, he went in for farming pursuits with his sons at the Red Hill, near Lilydale. He together his his sons had a nice orchard and vineyard, selling out after ten years. His sons started the business cnr Main and Castella streets now Dawborn and Morey. Mr Hand was a member of the first Road Board which met at Brushy Creek, but since then he has never taken an active part in public affairs. Mr Hand, who was 74 years of age, had been ailing for some time, but his death was not altogether unexpected. He had four sons, viz., Mr Henry Hand of Lilydale, Mr J. Hand of Seville. Mr W. Hand of Woori Yallock, and Mr T. Hand late shire engineer who died about 18 months ago. . . . [Lilydale Express 02-11-1889]

Trouble has again fallen on the Hand family of Seville. A few months ago the husband and father died, and now Henry, the oldest surviving son, has passed away. A fortnight ago he was stricken down with typhoid – typhoid of a very bad form – and though Drs Tighe and Adam did all that skill and unremitting attention could do, aided by two training nurses, he died last Wednesday at 2p.m. The remains were interred yesterday. A short service was held in the house and a very large number from the district followed to the cemetery. At the grave the Rev. T. Copeland spoke of the character of the deceased, naming his quiet, peaceful, kind disposition, and his thorough uprightness in business. . . Biography:

John Hand, was the son of William Hand and Frances Wingate from Nottinghamshire, England, and was born in 1844 at Prahran, Port Phillip. In the 1860s when aged about 16, moved to Lilydale with his family who established the Beehive sore on the north-east corner of Castella and Main streets.

In 1869 he married Elizabeth Campbell the daughter of Bradshaw Campbell and the following year he opened a business on the land he owned in Seville. Because his business was growing in 1877 he erected a large commodious shop. He was the Seville postmaster for 23 years and also the local electoral registrar. Biography:

Biography:

Richard Morton Hand, the son of Thomas Hand and Ann Morton, married Elizabeth King and with his family including Alfred, migrated to Australia on the Morning Light arriving Melbourne June 1862. Travelling with them were their children: Emma, Alfred, Margaret, Phoebe, Thomas, Robert and Richard. He died in 18971 aged 60 at Northcote. [PROV Shipping Records] Ernest Alfred Hand Alfred Hand Biography: Alfred was born at Flintham, Nottinghamshire on November 28, 1836. They had one child Elizabeth Georgina born at Lilydale in 1870. Elizabeth married Herbert Clarke in 1893 (BDM 6222). The Hand family arrived in Melbourne in 1862 on board the Morning Light and soon after went to Lilydale. At Lilydale Richard Hand selected the land now known as The Towers while Alfred headed to the Majorca (near Maryborough) goldfield. He returned and became a contractor for the shire. After some years he retired and devoted himself to viticulture developing Flintham Hill near Lilydale. In 1878 he opened a wine hall and in 1885 he sold the vineyard to A. Fulton. The Shire of Lillydale Rate Books list both Alfred and Jeannie as wine sellers. [BDM 6222; Gun Alley stories]

Biography:

Thomas Hand was born in England in 1839 and arrived Australia with his parents in 1841. Thomas was the brother of Henry and John. In 1862 he married Eliza Erith 1862, the same year he was appointed secretary-surveyor to Upper Yarra District Road Board. With the creation of the Shire of Lillydale in 1872, he was appointed its engineer. He lived in Cave Hill Rd before purchasing The Briars on Maroondah Highway in 1873. In 1870, he selected 23 acres on top of Mt Kalorama and built slab and bark house.

He selected additional land in 1874 making his holdings an area of 306 acres. To improve access he built Inverness Road at his own expense and completed his family home ‘Mountain Grange’ in 1881. [see various references below]

Obituary:

Death of the shire engineer Quite a gloom was cast over the district on Thursday when it became known that the dead body of Mr Thomas Hand had been found on the South Wandin Road early that morning. . . It appears that on the previous evening a horse with saddle and bridle came in to Dawborn, Morey & Co’s stable shortly after Mr Hand had left the township for home, but this excited no comment at the time, s the horse does not appear to have been recognised. Early on Thursday morning a carter on his way to Melbourne left word that the body was on the road, and the police were at once informed and arrangements made for an inquiry, the body being removed meanwhile to Wynfield, the residence of Mr Henry Hand, deceased’s brother. . .

The late Mr Hand was one of a numerous family, and was a native of Crockwell-Butler, Nottinghamshire, England. He leaves a widow and eight children, one of whom is Mrs J.S. Hooper, of Lilydale and another clerk of works under the Council. [Lilydale Express 05-05-1888] Inquiry: Mr Ladilaw J.P. held an inquiry into Thomas Hand’s death at Wynfield. He heard evidence from various people including Dr Henderson told the inquiry in his opinion Mr Hand died of effusion of blood on the brain or apoplexy. [Lilydale Express 05-05-1888]

Biography:

Samuel was the son of Samuel Hardidge who came from Somerset in England and settled in Doncaster with his wife and three children. The family moved to Croydon where three more children were born including Samuel who was the only surviving son. He was a councillor of the Shire of Lillydale from 1916 to 1918. Obituary:

Regret was widespread in Croydon when it was announced that Mr Samuel Hardidge’s extended period of ill-health had come to an end…Deceased who was 68 years of age, was a very old resident of Croydon, and had taken an active interest in practically every movement that would help towards its progress. For a brief term he represented the South-western riding in the Lillydale Shire Council, and amongst other activities he devoted considerable energy towards the advancement and improvement of the surroundings of the Croydon State School. The sympathy of residents go out t the widow and 12 children (eights daughters and four sons), all of whom are held in the highest respect. [Lilydale Express 04-05-1928]

Amelia Hardidge

Biography:

Amelia Hardidge (nee Bilcock) was born in Lonsdale St, Melbourne in 1864. She was the daughter of David Bilcock who arrived in Australia from Biggleswade, England and married Mary Long, daughter of a sea captain. He took up land in Croydon in 1881 and established the town’s first store. Their children were: Polly (Mrs Maggs), Alice (Mrs Exell), May (Mrs Bartlett), Beatrice (Mrs Thomson), Alma (Mrs Grave), David, William, Ruby (Mrs Morris), Frederick, Grace (Mrs La Fontaine), Fanny (Mrs Brown) and Alfred. Biography:

Eliza was the wife of Samuel Hardridge.

Samuel Hardridge

Biography:

Samuel came from Somerset England; he lived with his wife and three children in Bulleen Road, Doncaster and later came to Croydon where three more children were born. The six were Mary, Emily, Sarah (married Thomas Knee), Samuel (married Amelia Bilcock), Amelia (married Samuel Goodwin and Harry Lacey) and William [see above].

According to the newly created Shire of Lillydale, the Hardridges (as spelt) were leasing 100acres of land from the Crown in the Parish of Warrandyte in 1872. In 1875, the name in the rate book was changed – Hardridge crossed out and Hardidge added to Samuel’s entry. As at December 1878, the rate books showed Samuel owned the 100 acres freehold. The Hardridge land grant was taken up in 1881. It comprised the triangle bordered by Kent Ave, Croydon Rd and Whitehorse Rd, Croydon, excepting 25 acres taken up by E.A. Looby in 1877. The Hardridge land comprised 101 acres. An orchard was planted and the home site was the present Barina Cres. His Will directed that his 5 living children receive a life interest in the property. Eliza was the wife of Samuel Hardridge.

Samuel Hardridge

Biography:

Samuel came from Somerset England; he lived with his wife and three children in Bulleen Road, Doncaster and later came to Croydon where three more children were born. The six were Mary, Emily, Sarah (married Thomas Knee), Samuel (married Amelia Bilcock), Amelia (married Samuel Goodwin and Harry Lacey) and William [see above].

According to the newly created Shire of Lillydale, the Hardridges (as spelt) were leasing 100acres of land from the Crown in the Parish of Warrandyte in 1872. In 1875, the name in the rate book was changed – Hardridge crossed out and Hardidge added to Samuel’s entry. As at December 1878, the rate books showed Samuel owned the 100 acres freehold. The Hardridge land grant was taken up in 1881. It comprised the triangle bordered by Kent Ave, Croydon Rd and Whitehorse Rd, Croydon, excepting 25 acres taken up by E.A. Looby in 1877. The Hardridge land comprised 101 acres. An orchard was planted and the home site was the present Barina Cres. His Will directed that his 5 living children receive a life interest in the property. Biography:

Robert Harvey, farmer, first in rate books 1888, owner being Albert George Brooke, 88 acres, Gruyere. In 1891 Robert Harvey, Leasehold, 88 & I1 acres, Gruyere, now in name of Mary Harvey. 1892 the Colonial Bank now named for these two properties. “Islay” probably the 88 acre property. The property’s net annual value was £36.0.0.

Obituary:

The funeral of Robert Harvey left his residence “Islay” Gruyere for the Lilydale Cemetery with about 25 vehicles and a large number of horsemen joining. Passing through the township the inhabitants showed every respect. Rev A. Mackie unable to read burial service, but Rev J. Westacott, Methodist minister performed last rites at grave. Amongst those that followed the remains were Messrs R. Black, JP, J. Lithgow, JP, W. Laidlaw, JP, W.A. Goodall, R. Cahill and Dr. Kilpatrick. [Lilydale Express 30-05-1891]

Biography:

Ellen (Nellie) was born in Lilydale in 1879 and lived with her parents William and Matilda McIlrath until her marriage to Frederic Ames Hellicar in 1904. She lived at “Carnleigh”, Tarwin with her husband and young family until her untimely death. [McIlrath descendant Jan Bayley]

Mooroolbark Jottings:
Quite a gloom was cast over the district on Friday, owing to the death of Mrs. F Hellicar, youngest daughter of the late Mr W. McIlrath of this place. Mrs. Hellicar, who was born, and lived in this district up to the time of her marriage was very highly respected. She died at Dr Moore’s private hospital in Melbourne, and was brought to Lillydale to be buried, the funeral taking place on Saturday, when there was a very large gathering of relatives, friends and sympathisers at the grave. Biography:

William was born at Northumberland on 20-06-1853, the eldest son of William and Charlotte Henderson. The family arrive in Melbourne about 1859 when William was six years old. The family settled firstly Yering before selecting 80 acres in Victoria Rd. After the death of his father in 1880, William took over the property. [Wandin Its Origins and Early Development]

Mary Ann Judith Henderson

Biography:

Mary Ann Judith Henderson was one of the oldest pioneers of the district. She was born on June 7, 1858, the second daughter of Henry and Martha (Rihoy) Sebire of ‘Mont de Lancy’ Wandin The family at Wandin Yallock on June 23 1867. Mary Ann lived in the district for nearly 77 years and a member of the Wandin Yallock Methodist Church since its inception in 1868. She married William Henderson in 1884. She passed away at her residence ‘Belle Vue’ Wandin North on Monday, in her 86th year, 43 years after the death of her husband. She is survived by a family respected and well known throughout the district – Henry, Frank and Arthur and is the grandmother of Mavis, Mrs Riseborough, Ronald and Iris. Biography:

About 1908 William Henty set up an estate agency in Croydon having purchased a house in Oxford Rd in 1904, naming it Portland Place. He was joined in business by his wife’s brother Robert O’Hara Brmingham. The business traded as Henty and Co and sold land on the subdivided old orchards and farms. William Henty was the third son of Hon Stephen George Henty, one of the four Henty brothers who settled in Portland. S.G. Henty was elected to Upper House of the Victorian Parliament representing the Western Province in 1850, was re-elected in 1860 and retired in 1870 due to failing health. He died in December 1872. Mr William Henty, third son of the late Mr S.G. Henty, died at Portland Place, Croydon, on Saturday, at the aged of 72 years. Deceased was born at Findon, Kew, and was educated at the Melbourne Grammar School and Hamilton and Western District College. In his early days he resided with his mother at Tarrangton station, and he was well known as a footballer and athlete. He married Miss Sara Frances Bermingham, daughter of the late Captain Bermingham. Mr Henty’s father was one of the four pioneer brothers who settled in Portland in 1832, his father being the first white man to stand on the shore of the famous Blue Lake, Mount Gambier. Biography:

James Hewish, who was the fifth son of James and Maria Hewish of Cheriton Fitzpaine in Devon, England, was born on 01-08-1848. He arrived in Australia in 1841. From the mid-1880s Croydon started to develop. He took up virgin land at Mooroolbark. In 1881 he noticed the station property being pegged out for Croydon and was deeply interested. He moved to Croydon in 1885, three years after the railway arrived. . . Hewish Rd is named after the family.

He built his home and several other business ventures, including a general store, news agency, butchers shop and hotel, and planted various orchard trees. The Post Office opened on 1 December 1883 after the railway line was established. Nelson’s Hill Post Office opened nearby in 1902 and was renamed Burnt Bridge in 1979. James Hewish was patron of Croydon Cricket Club, and a first class orchardist, his garden became well known, with people travelling from Melbourne especially to see it. He was president of Ringwood and District Horticultural Society’s first show in 1897.The Hewish Estate, with west frontage to Main St, was subdivided in 1914 and this was where the Hewish orchard was located. Thomas Oliver Hewish

Biography:

Thomas, referred to as Oliver, managed the Hewish family orchard. The Australasian reported he worked in a way that indicated he had great knowledge about fruitgrowing. The family were growing a variety of apples and exporting some back home. The orchard was 10 acres, six of which had fruit-bearing trees and the remainder was planted with younger trees and growing vegetables. The orchard was started in 1898. The varieties of apples grown are Jonathan, Rome Beauty, Five Crown and Rokewood. Mainly Jonathons were exported to London. In 1911 the local newspaper reported that Oliver was going to establish a business as a general storekeeper and timber merchant. Kerr and R. Isabella Harriet Paul, the younger daughter of Andrew Paul of Mooroolbark married Thomas on December 13, 1865 at Hawthorn. Soon afterwards the couple moved to Marysville. Alfred was the eldest child of William and Sarah Ann Johnston.

William Thomas Hill

Biography:

Known as Bill, William was born at Lilydale in August 1851, the second child of Rowland Hill and Elizabeth Collins. After his father’s death Bill although only seven helped around the farm At 17 he joined other local Methodists in founding the Lilydale Tent of the Independent order of Rechabites and at the time of his death, was the oldest member of that Tent. At about 22 he married Hannah Campbell who died in 1875.
Ten years later he married Sarah Ann Johnston from Lilydale. Although he owned 10 acres at Cooring Yering he purchased a home in Anderson St, Lilydale where the family lived. About 1903 he joined Lilydale Shire as range or nuisance inspector and became widely known as Veterinary Bill because of his expertise with sick animals. Mr W. T. Hill passes. The death occurred on Sunday of Mr William Thomas Hill at his residence ‘Carlowrie’, Anderson St, Lilydale. Deceased who was 76 was one of the oldest residents of the district and until about 3 years ago was on the staff of the Lillydale Shire Council. About 12 months ago he became ill, and before the end came he was confined to his room for…six weeks…He was the oldest member of the Lilydale Tent I.O.R… He leaves a wife and one daughter (Mrs E. Sarah Ann was the second wife of William Thomas Hill. Sarah Ann Johnson was born at St Hubert’s, Yering in 1863, the daughter of George Johnston of Wandin Yallock. Mr and Mrs Roland Hill sustained a sad bereavement last week, in the death, on Friday, of their five weeks old daughter (should have been son). The little one had been ailing almost from its birth. [Lilydale Express 03-02-1905]

Roland J. Hill

Biography:

Rowland Hill was born in 1861 at Yering, the son of Rowland and Elizabeth (Collins) Hill. He married Jane Whitefrom Doncaster in 1893 first living at nearby ‘Mimosa’ before settling on their portion of the former ‘Cooring Yering’ property where he lived and worked for four decades. They suffered a great loss in 1916 when fire destroyed much of their dairying property . . [Lilydale Cemetery Tours Vol. 2 p20]

Mr R. Hill. – Connected with Lilydale from the very earliest days Mr Roland Hill whose death occurred Friday last is another pioneer [to pass away]%u2026He was a native of the district having been born at Bowie orchard, Nelson Rd Lilydale 76 years ago, on land his parents had selected. . he became a dairy farmer . . He was a foundation member of both the Masonic and Rechabite Lodges. . . The burial at Lilydale cemetery was attended by upwards of 100 mourners. Rev McMee conducted the service. . . He is survived by his widow and 7 children – Daisy, Rowley, Edward, Elsie, Clyde, Frank and Arthur. . . George Hodson

Biography:

George Hodson who was born in London, went to New Zealand about 1865. He landed in Auckland where he stayed for six year working in surveying during the time of the Maori war. He then went to Sydney where he conducted a hotel for three years after which he went on a trip in the ship John Wesley, which was wrecked off Tongataboo. He was picked up by a barque and carried to Sydney. He then came to Melbourne and again operated as hotel keeper there in other parts of Victoria, finally he settled down in Lilydale and purchased the hotel from Mr D. Lithgow who had owned it for 23 years. [Victoria and Its Metropolis Past and Present pg 410]

By December 31, 1885 George Hodson had taken over the Lilydale Hotel from David Lithgow. [Shire of Lillydale Ratebooks 1886 pg6 reg no.126] The family remained for about 2 years as by 31st December 1887, George Hodson has sold the hotel to one Federick N. May [Shire of Lillydale ratebooks 1888 pg 66 Reg 142]

Obituary:

Fatality at Marysville . . everyone in the Lilydale and Wandin districts were shocked to learn of the tragic death of George H. Hogg, 45, of Don Rd Marysville, formerly a prominent resident of Wandin . . after his severe injuries an ambulance was called for Melbourne, covering the 126 miles there and back in three and a half hours in wet conditions, to no avail as he died before the hospital was reached. Before being given over to the ambulance he was carried a mile and half on a bush stretcher to a Marysville doctor. In the course of his work, the victim who was driving a tractor for the Vic-Oak Sawmilling Co. backed into a tree which dropped a heavy branch on his head . . He had faced illness and unemployment before going to work in Marysville. The funeral took place at Lilydale cemetery . . Rev. G. A. Osmond administered the last rites assisted by Rev. T. He operated a private jam factory on the property for many years providing an outlet for much of the fruit of the district, particularly raspberries. His products were of high quality%u2026his children are James, John, Thomas, Mary Isabella and Janet (Mrs Thomas Rouget) . . family members later acquired property in Queens Rd where they lived for many years. The late Mr Thomas Hogg . . has been connected with the Wandin district for 29 years . . born at Merton, near Edinburgh in 1821, he later married before coming to the colonies, arriving in Sydney in 1863, he moved to Brighton and Yering then arrived in this district [Wandin] in May 1866 . . As the first settler he may be considered the founder of this district . . He laboriously constructed a home for his family and set about converting the almost impenetrable forests into fruit bearing orchards . . . next in 1869 he organised the building of a Methodist Sunday school room which was also used as a church, and day school, of which he was superintendent for 18 years . . For many years he was a member of the local Board of Advice and trustee of the church and school buildings . . the last six months of his life were spent entirely in his bedroom. Biography:

Edward Hunter was born on February 24, 1817, at Northumberland. He was the 10th or 13 children of Robert and Martha Hunter (Reed). His father died when Edward was 11 so he left school and worked in the collieries to assist his mother. On May 25, 1845 he married Jane Pattison, the daughter of William and Jane (Temperley) Pattison. He sailed for Australia on September 11,1852 on the Emigrant with Jane and three surviving children: Robert, William and Edward. At Heidelberg they purchased land for a market garden and orchard and during 14 years had a further 6 children. Moving to Wandin he purchased land . . becoming a fruit grower and nurseryman; propagating a new thornless raspberry named Hunter’s Perfection . . . [LDHS Hunter Family File]

Obituary:

We report the death of the late Mr Edward Hunter JP of Wandin. Mr Hunter arrived in the colony in 1850 from the North of England, and, after a short residence at Heidelberg, he removed with his family to Wandin,and with others, helped to make the district a success both financially and morally. Our late friend, with the early settlers in the district, made provision for the education of children when there were no State schools in the colony, and he also helped to erect the first church in the district of Wandin Yallock, and from that time up to his death he was an active trustee and also the treasurer. . . Daniel Whitehead Hurst (b. 1851 Running (Olinda) Creek…(lived near Port Fairy in 1889) had land at White’s Corner d. 21 Jan 1918 (Reg. Lilydale). At Gilderoy, Yarra Valley as a fruitgrower and grazier…leaving his estate of 268 acres at Three Bridges to his nephews and neices. His parents were Edward Hurst d. 1889 and Ann Hurst nee Whitehead d. 1867

Obituary:

Daniel Hurst, an elderly man who cultivated a small farm at Three bridges on the Powelltown line from Yarra Junction, was accidentally killed on Monday last…His waggon was descending the steep hill into Seville township when the breeching strap broke and the horse bolted…Hurst sprang out but the heavy waggon passed over his body…Deceased was a single man…it is believed a brother resides in the Geelong district…[Lilydale Express 25-01-1918]

Eliza Hussey was the 11th child of William and Mary Ann (Shippen) Hussey and was born at Yering in January 1864. She died June 19, 1864 aged 6 months. The Hussey headstone is the oldest one at the cemetery.

Robert Hussey

Biography:

Robert Hussey and his twin brother Joseph were born in 1865 at Yering. He was the 12th child of William and Mary Ann (Shippen) Hussey. He died on April 15, 1865.

William Hussey

Biography:

William born Hampshire England c1822, the son of William and Charlotte. When aged 21, he travelled arrived in Australia on the vessel Royal Consort in February 1844. He married Mary Ann Shippen at St James Church, Melbourne on September 13, 1845. A wheelwright and later publican, William and his family lived in Melbourne before moving Brushy Creek by 1859 where two of their children were born. The family moved to live at ‘The Lodge’ Yering in September 1868. He operated the Coldstream Hotel for just over three months before his death. Mary Ann remarried to William Park and renamed the hotel Park’s Sportsman’s Arms Hotel.

Joseph Hussey

Biography:

Joseph was the twin brother to Robert Hussey and the 1th child of William and Mary Ann Hussey. He was born in 1865 at Yering and died on January 8, 1869 aged 4 years.

Biography:

Ann Hussey, the 7th child of William and May Ann Hussey was born at Yering in 1856 and died on January 14, 1869, aged 13 years.

Lily Easter Hussey

Biography:

Lily was the 14th and youngest child of William and Mary Ann Hussey and was born in 1867 at Yering. She died on January 20, 1869 aged 18 months and was the fourth member of the family to die in less than a month.

In the death of Mr John Huston on Sunday night . . . another of the oldest residents of the Lilydale district has passed away. . . Coming to Australia with his widow mother from Coloraine, Ireland, [where he was born] in 1852, he arrived in Australia in 1863, where he lived with his uncles Messrs Lithgow who had proceeded his mother to this country. With the exception of twelve years, which he spent in fruit-growing and market gardening at Hoddles Creek, he spent the remainder of his 82 years in Lilydale. When Mr Huston first came to Lilydale there were only two houses. The late Mr Huston married the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Atkinson, and five sons and three daughters are still alive. During his life the late Mr John Huston associated himself with the Independent Order of Rechabites. Always an earnest and devout churchman he was an active worker and member of the Methodist church. Biography:

John Hutchinson was born at Cairncastle Northern Ireland in 1825 with his twin brother Robert. With money from his brother Joseph, John sailed for Australia on the clipper Marco Polo in 1853 which arrived at Port Phillip in January 1854. In 1856 John Hutchinson settled in Warrandyte where he was a land holder and the pound keeper. His job included travel which led to him building his own herd of cattle and horses while watching for the opportunity to buy land.
The Lilydale land sales of 1860 saw John purchasing two town and four country allotments. He built three houses east of the Lilydale Hotel which housed a butcher, a saddler and a builder. Later, one became the home of Lilydale’s first physician Dr Elms. John became a full time resident by 1871 and a major figure in Lilydale’s history.
A reliable business agent, he served 10 years on various committees such as school committees and obtaining a new minister for the Presbyterian faith. As a member of the Upper Yarra District Road Board, John saw it become The Lillydale Shire in 1872. He was elected the first Shire President representing the South West Riding. At the age of 50 years he met an untimely death after being kicked by a horse outside the family home which today is the Olinda Creek Hotel. John Waddell Hutchinson

Biography:

John Waddell was born at Lilydale in 1871 at Lilydale and died July 16, 1891 at Lilydale of typhoid fever.

Death Notice:

Hutchinson – On the 16th July at his mother’s residence, Lilydale, John Waddell, elder beloved son of Eliza and the late John Hutchinson of typhoid fever aged 20 years. [Lilydale Express 17-07-1891 pg 2]

Obituary:

It will be learnt with very deep regret by the residents of the Lilydale and Healesville districts of the death of Mr John Hutchinson. The young man was a carpenter by profession, and was extremely well liked by all who made his acquaintance. About eh beginning of June, Mr Hutchinson was following his occupation in the Hamilton district, and became ill, but did not give way to the aliment until about the 20th ult, when he returned home to Lilydale and took to his bed. Drs Norris and Craig were called in, and pronounced the deceased to be suffering from typhoid fever. He underwent many relapses, but on Wednesday morning he took a change which completely prostrated him. He lingered until 3.30a.m. yesterday when he expired. Mr Hutchinson, when in Lilydale, was a very prominent member of the Lilydale Football Club, and was greatly esteemed by the members. The funeral will take place this afternoon, and will leave the deceased’s late residence, Cave Hill road, at 3 o’clock. Rev Mr McBride of Dromana, will conduct the funeral service at the grave. Eliza Hutchinson

Biography:

Eliza was from Warrandyte and on March 3, 1863 at Melbourne she married John Hutchinson. They had nine children.
After her husband’s death, Eliza moved into a home owned by her later husband in Castella Street until a new home – the stone house – built of Rosemount stone was completed at 32 Cave Hill Rd during 1882. Death of Old Resident – Mrs J. Hutchinson, mother of Mr John Hutchinson, storekeeper, Lilydale, passed away on Thursday, February 14th, at her late residence, Edward road, Lilydale after a very short illness. Mrs Hutchinson took ill on the Sunday and notwithstanding that every attention as bestowed on her, death supervened on Thursday. Death of prominent townsman, Mr J. Hutchinson JP. . . there are not many institutions in Lilydale that [he] has not been associated with . . Under his management Hutchinson’s stores have grown to their large and up-to-date proportions, mainly as a direct outcome of his unfailing courtesy and infallible integrity. As a JP his was a familiar figure at the local police court until recently when his health gave way . . for two months prior to his demise he was confined to bed . . an ardent churchman at the Baptist church . . . . . it was learned with deep regret on Monday that Mrs J. Hutchinson of Albert Hill, Lilydale, had passed away during the night. . . during many years resident in this town, an earnest church worker and a member of almost every institution in town for the moral and spiritual welfare of the community. A kindly and generous disposition endeared her to all and she was idolised by her family. . . [She] was 65 and the relict of the late Mr J. Hutchinson one of the district’s earliest and most respected traders and founder of the business presently being conducted by his sons. Biography:

Born in Kent, England William Forbes Hutton was the seventh of 11 children of Thomas and Janet Hutton. His father had been a merchant in East Indies. After finishing his education at the Edinburgh Academy William entered the East India Company army as a member of the Madras Native Infantry and served from 1836-1870. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1837 and later Colonel. Interested in geology, he began collecting rocks and minerals while on his travels. He was also involved in the sale of tea and doing well financially. On one of his many trips back to England William married Eleonora Mackillop in 1849.
He arrived in Australia in the 1870s and purchased Blythswood in Kew which he sold in 1882 to David Syme of the Age newspaper.
In December 1876 he purchased land at Lilydale from Alfred John Hill and had Cooring Yering, a 35-room brick mansion built by David Mitchell. He also purchased Samuel de Pury’s 30-acre vineyard across the Olinda Creek.
The family enjoyed the social life of Melbourne attending concerts, the theatre, horse racing and clubs. After William’s death his family continued to run the property. Robert Black, another district pioneer, later purchased Cooring Yering. [Lilydale Cemetery Tour Volume 2, pg15]

Colonel William Forbes Hutton died at his residence Cooring Yering on Saturday. [He was 80] and served in the East India Company’s service in his early years and held the rank of Lieutenant colonel. After his arrival in this colony, he lived for a number of years at Kew, and about 20 years ago took up his residence in this district, settling down on the property held by him at the time of his death. Although Colonel Hutton lived a retired life, he was highly esteemed for his kind and charitable disposition. He leaves a widow and grown up family. [The Argus 30-11-1896 pg6]

Eleonora Forbes

Biography:

Eleonora Mackillop was born on 11-12-1830 and married William Hutton in England in 1849 while he was home from service in India. After the birth of their first child George, they travelled to India.
They had 11 children. Mary and some of the children arrived in Australia in 1874 on the ship Northumberland, six months after William who was having trouble finding a home large enough for his family. The Hutton Family & Cooring Yering, Family Connections pg 8 and 9]
