Fred was born at Kensington Hill (Collingwood) in 1891 to parents John Davies and Jane Diamond.
He was one of a large family of brothers all of whom served. His brother Isaac also died in 1916. Mrs Davies had lived at “Valley Farm” Kilsyth for some 23 years. He also had a sister Mrs W. Fairbank. [Lilydale Express May 25, 1918]

Family Story:

The eldest Davies son, Isaac was born 1877 Dunolly near Maryborough, to parents John Davies and Jane Diamond.
He enlisted in the Boer war and initially served as 522 Private in the 4th Contingent, Australian Commonwealth Horse, in South Africa. The unit departed Melbourne on March 26, 1902. On arrival in Durban, the unit entrained to Newcastle and was involved in operations in Volksrust, Transvaal, until the cessation of hostilities on May 31. The unit departed Durban on July 28, 1902, he was discharged in Melbourne on August 7 and awarded the Queen’s South Africa Medal.

He had a son from 1st marriage (details unknown) who was raised by Isaac’s mother Jane Davies.
He married (2nd) Mary Elizabeth possibly in Western Australia.
Three of his brothers also served in this war, Frederick Charles (774) KIA 1918, George Edward (6884) and Robert Daniel (5006).

In 1920 he married Rose Douglas, family is not known. Robert died June 1959 at Boronia and was cremated 23 June 1959 at Springvale. Rose died 1977 at Boronia. Three of Robert’s brothers also served in this war: Frederick Charles (774), George Edward (6884), and Isaac David (2366), Fred and Isaac were both killed in action.

Family Story:

Cyril was born 1888 in Colac to parents John and Matilda Dennis. He had siblings – Norma Evelyn Emma (b) 1885 and Ethel (b) 1887 both at Colac. John died in 1904 and was buried at Lilydale Cemetery July 6, 1904 (CE2 -19/20) and Matilda died in 1922 and was buried September 1922 with John.

Cyril married Hilda Elaine Syme in 1923 , born in 1898 to Lilydale doctor, Arthur Edward Syme and Amy Horne.
After their marriage the couple took up Soldier Settlement Land – Nambrok Denison Irrigation area 20/26 near Sale.

Cyril died on the August 17, 1955 in Sale aged 67 years and was cremated at Springvale Cemetery. Hilda died at Heyfield 1972 aged 74years and was also cremated and interred at Springvale on May22, 1972. (Army Service records and BDM)

Florian was born in 1886 Lilydale to parents Louis Auguste Deschamp and Anna Marguerite Vuillemin. Anna was the 2nd wife of Auguste, both born in Switzerland, where the Deschamp family originally came from, being a very early Lilydale viticulturist family with several vineyards. Florian was a farmer, sculptor and artist and never married. He died in Queensland in the late 1940s. [LDHS archives]

Archie was born 1894 in Wandong near Kilmore to parents Alexander Dick and Jessie Jane Simpson. He was 21 year old miner in Sydney NSW when he enlisted at Liverpool in 1915. His brother John enlisted in Melbourne only  two months prior to Archie. Both were Killed in Action and their names are on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres Belgium. John known as Jack was born 1891 Lilydale to parents Alexander Dick and Jessie Jane Simpson. He was 23 years of age when he enlisted in Melbourne 2 months to his brother Archie. Both were Killed in Action within a day of each other. Archie October 5, 1917 (211) and Jack on October 4, 1917 (1620). Their names are on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres in Belgium.

Family Story: William was born on 26th October 1893 in Mount Browne New South Wales parents unknown. He married on returning home to Jean Emily Dickens He had a brother Edward Joseph and another Mr S. E. Dickens, both living in South Australia. In 1939 Bill and Jean were living and farming in Yarra Glen, when they lost their home and all belongings in the bush fires on 13th January 1939. They then moved to Symons Street Healesville. He served in World War 2 (1939-1945) Service No. VX 114291 By 1952 he was living in Allan St. Kyabram and was a Lieutenant Colonel retired. He died Major W. J. Dickens in 1976 Barmera, South Australia where he was currently living.

James was born in 1865 in Armidale NSW, parents not known. He was a farmer and was married to Isabella and was a veteran of the Boer War – 1899-1902 Serving in the 3 contingent for 2 years. He played cricket for Mooroolbark and Coldstream and was a very respected member of the community. He died in hospital in Melbourne March, 3 1943 following a stroke, and his funeral was held in Ballarat.

Harry was born September 7, 1889 in Seville to Thomas Duck and Mary Jane Albury, they had twelve children, 6 girls and 6 boys, Harry being the youngest boy. In 1916 he married Louisa Berry and had 3 children Maisie, Alwyn and Anne, he married a further two times to May Alway, and later Anne (Emery) Peet.

John was born Patrick John February 5, 1870 at Yering (Lilydale) to parents Michael and Ellen Duffy, both deceased. (Family history in files)
John gave his age in service records as born 1872. His brother William Thomas Duffy Service No. 6260 also served.
Family records state that John married Mrs Anna Roach (widow) 1916 in Melbourne (8 children) but there no history of why he went to West Australia, although he had two brothers over there, William Thomas and a Michael. A Patrick John died January 30, 1944 Northam West Australia (family history)

William Thomas Duffy was born February 15, 1880 Mooroolbark (family notes) but  c1883 Ringwood on his army papers.
His parents were Michael and Ellen both deceased.
He had brothers Patrick John (known as John), and Michael, John served also No.4315.
At the time of his enlistment, William was working in the West with the railways.

Family Story:

Edward Duncan was born in 1877 at Wandiligong (near Bright) to parents Edward Wallace Duncan and Margaret Johnson. They came to Australia from Liverpool in 1856. He had siblings: Julia Harriet b.d.1874, James Thomas 1875-1952, George Frederick 1879-1937, and Francis Wallace 1882- Edward was educated at Caulfield Grammar School.
He was one of the many who went through the first gold rush to the Klondyke in Canada. He was also successful in some mining ventures, going to New Guinea with a prospecting party, and being in danger of getting killed by the natives.

He saw service in the Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa, where he received a Distinguished Service Medal for gallant service. (Argus July 22, 1901) Returning home from the war Edward was to manage his father’s estate in Wandiligong for a time, then from 1908-1912 he worked as an engine driver. In 1909 he married Agnes Mary Wallace at Wandiligong, Mary was born in 1874 at Growler’s Creek near Wandiligong.

They had two sons born at Wandiligong, Wallace in 1910 and Neil in 1911. They both attended Lilydale Primary School. In 1913 the family moved to Lilydale and Edward purchased the Lilydale Hotel, he was now listed as a Licensed Victualler. This was where Euphemia was born in 1913 and then Albert Edward (John) in 1915.

Edward took an active part in politics, and contested the Evelyn seat at the 1914-15 State Elections, in the Labour interests. He was also a cousin of Mr T. E. Harrison, JP, Manager of the Colonial Bank, Lilydale. When Edward enlisted for WW1 in 1915 and served in the 6th Machine Gun Company, he was aged 38 years, married with four children and attended the Lilydale Church of England.

Agnes went to Wangaratta to be with her sister when her husband Mr H.P Richards JP, died from heart trouble. It was while she was there that she learnt that Edward had lost his life September 26,1917 in Belgium. (Obituary Lilydale Express October 12, 1917)

After his death Agnes moved to Malvern East, but she ownership of the hotel until 1922 when she sold it to the Connelly family. Agnes died in 1958 at Sandford (near Casterton).
