Sophie Henrietta Rochat sister of Jules Henri Rochat, died at Lilydale on Sunday 8 August 1926 at Lilydale. Sophie was a sister of Jules Henri Rochat who was a poultry farmer/farmer on Warburton road Lilydale from 1914 to 1934.

Biography:

James Rose was born at Slackhillock in Staffordshire, England and arrived in the Seville area in 1892 when 26 years old. Later he married Rosina Deppeler and they had five sons and two daughters. James was a fruit and berry grower and continued this occupation until his death. [Seville The Vision and the Reality, pg 90]

Biography:

Twenty-one year-old Isaac Rourke, a farmer from Lillydale was riding in Bourke Street west leading a young colt. Suddenly a dog frightened the young cold which broke away from Isaac. When following the colt, Isaac’s horse slipped in a water channel and fell on him. He was taken to the Melbourne Hospital suffering a number of wounds. He died several hours later. An inquest found the horse’s foot caught on stones causing him to fall on his dead and rolled over on Isaac. The Inquest’s verdict was accidental death. Isaac died on March 21, 1866 but was not interred at Lilydale until November 10, 1866. [The Argus 23-03-1866; The Age 23-03-1866; The Herald 23 -03-1866]

Ann Rourke

Obituary:

It is with regret we announce the death of Mrs Rourke, the wife of Denis Rourke Esq, of this township and the mother of John Rourke Esq., JP and ex-president of the Lilydale Shire council. The deceased lady died somewhat suddenly …. after a short illness and was much respected as an old resident and active member of the Church of England here. Her remains were interred in Lilydale cemetery….the funeral cortege was one of the largest seen in the district [Evelyn Observer 02-10 -1885]

Denis Rourke

Biography:

Denis Rourke was born about 1807 in County Carlow, Ireland. In February1852 he arrived in Melbourne on board the Chowringhee with his family. The PROV Shipping Records lists the family and their ages: Ann 36, Dennis 41, Rosanna 21, Henry 19, Lavinia 17, John 13, Eliza 11, Isaac 9, Emma 7 and James 4. With his son John Denis settled in Lilydale in 1853 and started farming and carrying to Bendigo and other places. At the time of their settlement there were three houses in the district. News item:

At its council meeting on Saturday, March 26, 1887, Lilydale Council President Cr Baker mentioned the death of Mr D. Rourke, and as he was one of the oldest residents in the Lillydale district,and also the father of one of the sitting members of the council he thought it would be better if council adjourned after passing the accounts.[Lilydale Express 01-04-1887]

Death Notice

Rourke – On Friday 25th March at Lilydale, Denis, second son of the late Patrick Rourke, of County Carlow, Ireland, and brother of the late H. Rourke, railway contractor and station holder, aged 84 years. Deeply regretted by a large circle of friends. [Lilydale Express 01-04- 1887]

Obituary:

We are sorry to have to record the death of a very old and respected resident Mr Denis Rourke. The deceased gentleman expired somewhat suddenly at his residence on 25th ult…. Mr Rourke had arrived at a ripe old age being in his eighty-third year …. He was a man of very active temperament, an old colonist and a large property holder in the district. Mr Rourke was an active adherent of the English Church and last Sunday at Saint John’s Church Lilydale The Rev Mr Jennings conducted an impressive service….The deceased gentleman was the father of John Rourke, Esq. (JP and ex-president of the shire council), and also of Mrs John Lithgow, of Flowerfield. [Lilydale Express 01-04- 1887]

…. Mr Ryan’s death at the comparatively early age of 48, is deeply regretted, inasmuch as he leaves a widow and family of five – two daughters and three sons …. The late Mr Ryan came to Wandin about 8 years ago to manage Evelyn Preserving Company factory …. he was a pastmaster in the area of jam making and fruit preserving …. He always took a keen interest in sport [especially] cricket….[He] was a general favourite with employees…. In their sad bereavement much sympathy is felt for Mrs Ryan and family.
