Biography:
Ellis Theobald Jeeves, the son of Isaac and Ann (nee Theobald) was a member of one of the first pioneer families of Mt Dandenong, and had been associated with development and improvement of district since early settlement. Reared in days of hardship and struggle, he became a many-sided man, always equal to the emergency of the moment, such as setting his own broken leg. He was a lover of truth and justice, a reader and thinker, and thoughtful speaker with dry and biting humour. A horse lover and horse master he would never part with a faithful team horse unless he was sure of a good home for it. Ellis and Eliza operated Mount Joy guest house at Kalorama. As a coach proprietor he sustained a three times a day service between the mountain and Croydon. To provide for this service he had up to 50 horses based at Montrose. He died in harness, almost on the road, at a fatal accident at Sassafrass. There was a large gathering of friends at Lilydale cemetery. [Lilydale Express 08-07-1921]

John Jordan
Obituary:
Mr John Jordan – With the passing of Mr John Jordan on October 9 at his residence, Cave Hill road, Lilydale, removes still another of the township’s well-known identities. He was 82 years of age…Deceased’s juvenile days were spent at Lilydale Cave Hill Limeworks where his father was the first manager appointed to superintend quarrying operations when David Mitchell purchased the estate from the Hon. George Nicholson in 1878. “Jack” was apprenticed to the building trade and later migrated to Western Australia during the financial depression in 1893 where he eventually became a most successful builder and contractor. Later he returned to Victoria where he specialised in stone and brick buildings, mainly using ornamental stone from Black’s Lilydale Quarries. Many of the city’s most attractive stone facades to suburban houses and fences are the result of these fine works of varied artistic designs. His wife Sarah predeceased him.
