Family Story:
Thomas was born at Lilydale on December 12, 1895.
He signed a Statutory Declaration as McCarthy, about his birth date and name; however in 1917 the Government Statist claims indexes had been searched from 1894-1898 with no record of his birth found.
Attached to the Service Records of Thomas McCarthy is an application for enlistment dated November 10, 1917 at Flinders, in the name of Thomas Scales, grocer, with a postal address of Lilydale.
The Lilydale Progress Association congratulated Private T. Scales as a departing soldier. (Lilydale Express February 22, 1918).
T. Scales is noted as being on the Lilydale State School Honour Roll (Lilydale Express May 3, 1918). On October 16, 1919, T. McCarthy was admitted to Lilydale RSL as a transfer member. On March 25, 1920. The RSL minutes record him as acquiring one of the available ‘suit lengths’. However Minutes of a month before, in another hand, February 12, 1920 list T. Scales as a financial member.
It seems the Lilydale community knew Thomas as Scales because he lived with them but he was born McCarthy.
An Ancestry search finds the Lilydale Cemetery grave of Joseph and Nellie Black (nee Scales). An Ancientfaces.com search finds and Alfred Thomas Scales born 1869 at Lilydale to George and Mary Scales (nee Twogood).

Family Story:
Michael was born in Murrindini (near Yea) in 1889, to a Mr J. McCristal He was a railway employee and at the time of enlistment in 1914 he was a porter at Sea Lake. He was one of the longest serving servicemen having ticked up 1977 days during WW1.
In 1920 he married Alice Wood, no family is known.
Between 1922 and 1927 he was at Corangamite and Winchelsea railway.
In 1929 he was Station Master at Armytage.
In 1936 at Taradale and Bendigo stations, and 1949-1954 Moonee Ponds. (Electoral rolls)
In 1967 Michael was living 16 Bleazley St., Bentleigh (army papers) It is not known when he died or where he is buried.

John Robert was born March 31, 1899 at Mooroolbark to John and Alice Matilda McGhee, nee Munday.
Alice was the second wife of John sen., as first wife Janet Paul (b.1858) died in 1890.
John Robert McGhee was a Presbyterian. He married Eunice Patterson and they had Jeffrey, b.1941, Roger b.1943, and Malcolm b.1945.
The Back to Lilydale Reunion book tells us that at the residence of father John McGhee sen., George White and David Briers carried on an extensive blacksmith’s & wheelwrights establishment in 1880 and for 20 years after. (Lilydale Express October 19, 1917 p16 ).
On Monday last, J. McGhee, employed in the Lilydale Post Office, enlisted for active service abroad in the artillery. Young McGhee has just turned 18 years and has been granted his parents consent. He is a son of Councillor John McGhee of Lilydale who has taken an active part in recruiting. Councillor John McGhee was also part of the community push for a war memorial for Lilydale. A public meeting was held in June 1918. (Lilydale Express June 14, 1918.
John Robert McGhee’s Victory Medal was sent to him at 15 Church St Canterbury in 1934. He died at Canterbury, Victoria c.1984, and is buried at Box Hill Cemetery. The society’s Headstones Project has a record for a John Robert Arthur McGhee born March 31, 1899.

Family Story:
Leslie Ross McGregor was born near Melbourne on October 22, 1883, to Donald and Jane McGregor, nee Hockin. Leslie was Presbyterian and was educated at Brighton Grammar.
He passed the Dental Board examination qualifying to be registered in Victoria. His fatherDonald was a dentist at 23 Collins St and Leslie was apprenticed to him for four years.
He advertised as a dentist in Main St, Lilydale, and that he visited Yarra Glen, Warburton and Yarra Junction on certain days. (Lilydale Express July 16, 1915).
At this time he was also appointed a book and magazine collector for the Australian soldiers, for use in hospitals and on hospital ships and he was “pleased to received supplies and to transmit same to the proper channels”. (Lilydale Express July, 16, 1915).
From April 13, 1916 onwards, Leslie served as a Dental Officer in A.A.M.C. Dental Reserve, until he enlisted. He was a member of Lilydale Scouts committee and was farewelled by them on enlistment. (Lilydale Express April 4, 1916).
On his return, he joined the Lilydale RSL. In November 1923, the Crown Solicitor provided his military record to PC Constable McKerral, St Kilda Rd, Melbourne, as he is to stand trial at the General Sessions Court, Melbourne on December 3, 1923. [Case not found].
An obituary for his mother Jane McGregor: McGregor Jane: relict of the late Donald, at her home 81 Chapel St, St Kilda. Children: Mabel Flora (Mrs M. J. Bean) and Leslie Ross, [she was the] last surviving member of the family of the late William Hockin, aged 83 years. (the Argus June 7, 1937 p1).
In February 1938 Leslie is involved in a “Wills case tangle”.(Argus February 3, 1938)., which involved the will of Leslie’s grandfather Hockin, and the subsequent will of his mother Jane, in dispute over a property in Avoca St, South Yarra, left to Leslie. (Argus February 3, 1938).
In 1945, Probate was sought in the Will of the late Leslie Ross McGregor of Bragge St., Frankston. (Argus November, 12 1945 p.18).

On 5th October at the Melbourne Hospital, Elizabeth Ann, the dearly beloved wife of Louis Bombaderia of Clyde Rd, Lilydale, and loving mother of Kenneth, Hugh, Tom, Lizzie (deceased), Donald (deceased), and Alan McGuiness, and Stephen Bombaderia, aged 64 years – at rest. Alan attended the first meeting of the Lilydale RSL but is not mentioned in other minutes of Volumes 1 and 2.

Family Story:
obert John McKenna was born in 1885 in County Armagh, Ireland. He was Catholic. Before enlistment he had served in His Majesty’s Service in South Africa and India. His listed Next of Kin, A. J. Watts, moved from Donald to Bonnie Doon, where he was a baker.
In 1916 a Miss Lal Gilchrist of Albert Park writes for Next of Kin details, as Robert was one of her cousins best friends on the battlefield. His Next of Kin was not traced until 1922, when it was found that he had a wife Margaret McKenna at 30 Lindsay St, Ormean Rd, Belfast, Ireland.

Athol was born in 1899 Minyip Victoria to parents Duncan McLachlon and Annie Maude Rae. He was an employee of the Lilydale Post Office when he enlisted, but by the time he had his training at Broadmeadows, the war was over and he was discharged.
In 1938 He married Jean Ethel Cowan. The electoral rolls show that from 1922-1968 he was in the Corangamite area. Athol died at Winchelsea December 27, 1971 aged 77 years and was buried at Winchelsea Cemetery.

Family Story:
Francis was born near Melbourne in 1890 to Louis McLass and Mary Elizabeth McLass, nee Dempsey.
In 1917 his father Louis wrote thanking the Lilydale mayor for news of his son. Louis also advertised as a hairdresser and tobacconist in Main St, Lilydale. Louis was a noted athletic walker in the 1890s. [Back to Lilydale Reunion].
He was also one of the local citizens campaigning for a war memorial for Lilydale. (Lilydale Express June 14, 1918).
Francis seems to have married Edith Jane McLass, nee Howell (b. 1895 at Wandin Yallock) just before embarking. She writes in 1917, as a Main St Lilydale hairdresser, asking for his address overseas.
On discharge, a copy of Francis’s health report was sent to MUIOOF, Lilydale, which Francis complains, has incorrect details.
Court Martial proceedings against Francis are filed in the Attorney General’s Department and numbered 18297. [Charge unknown.]
Francis was a member of the Lilydale RSL and died in 1948 (The Age 23.6.1948 p2):

Family Story:
James was born 1879 in Heathcote Victoria, parents unknown, On returning home he married Emilie Rose and lived in Cave Hill Road. Lilydale. They had children Leonard, Harold, Olive, Marjorie and Elsie.
James died in the Lilydale Bush Nursing Hospital November 14, 1940 aged 62 years, and was buried in the Lilydale Cemetery. In a letter to the Army dated January, 29, 1917 from Mr W. J. Sebire (carpenter and builder, Clarke St. Lilydale) he was referred to as a shoeing smith.
