Family Story:
Dorothy was born August 2, 1884 in Colac Victoria to parents Peter and Margaret Moroney (nee Jamieson) she never married and was one of 16 children.
She attended Lilydale State School and did her nursing training at Collingwood Baby Health centre and Caulfield Military Hospital. Her brother Jack served in South Africa in the Boer War, enlisting in 1901 with the South African Light Horse returning with severe permanent injuries.
Dorothy enlisted on August 16, 1916 and departed on the Mooltan just 8 days later. After almost 12 months nursing in Poona and Bombay in India, Dorothy sailed to the Mediterranean where she nursed at Alexandrina, Salonika, Greece and Egypt.
In July 1918 Dorothy received 21 days leave to come home from the war to nurse her brother Jack. (Eileen Finlay’s The Caravan Passes Again)
Ultimately Dorothy went back to Caulfield with her much beloved wounded boys, and kept in touch down thru the years with many. Going on duty one night, she asked: “ Anything you boys want ?” “Yes, Sister, said an Officer, you haven’t kissed me goodnight”. Quickly came the reply: “Oh, no, we keep orderlies to do our dirty work here! (Lilydale Express April 29, 1949)
Her sister Eileen Finlay became a well-known author of the later 1940s and 50s, however, Dorothy also showed her writing skills in letters she sent home. Some of which were published. In them she gave graphic accounts of ship life, of Aden and Alexandria:
Oh! The fascination of it all – and the colouring – quite difference from India. The sunset behind the desert! On, the colours and that beautiful golden and pink light that one sees in the pictures of places and the tall palms, and the donkeys, and camels, while the Arabs in their gowns and hoods look as they had just stepped out the Bible. The irrigation, of course is marvelous, and it is wonderful to see that part of the desert on one side of the line that is irrigable “blooming like the rose,” and on the other side nothing by an illimitable stretch of golden sand. At several station we saw Australian hats so we hung out and ‘coo-eed,” which of course brought them along and it was lovely to see them.” (Lilydale Express October 12, 1917 pg2)
Dorothy died in 1949 in Armadale aged 65 years, and was cremated at Springvale Cemetery on April 20 and her ashes placed in the Tristania Garden F4 Bed 16 Rose 24.
It would have made her proud to know the number of Anzacs who attended her service, and placed Flanders poppies gently on her coffin as she lay resting under the Union Jack (Lilydale Express April 29, 1949)
