Biography:
Alexander Mackie came to the district about 1870 at the invitation of the Presbyterians. The first services were held in the building west of the Olinda Creek in Main St, Lilydale. His original pastorate cover Kangaroo Ground, Yarra Flats (now Yarra Glen) and Lilydale. He was the brother of Rev George Mackie, minister at South Yarra. While studying for the ministry he also studied medicine at Melbourne University and had passed the second year course when he was ordained a minister of the church. Shortly afterwards he was called to Echuca. Medical studies were suspended and resumed about six years ago passing two more courses before being forced to give it up due to ill health. Mr Mackie’s medical knowledge was of incalculable service to residents of the bush in the early days when doctors were no so easily called in as now, and many a life has under the blessing of God been save by his timely assistance and medical skill. [Lilydale Express 10-06-1892]
Obituary:
. . . Mr Mackie was a real bush person; nothing daunted him. He has often had to swim his horse through the flooded flats of the Yarra, so as not to disappoint a congregation waiting for services at the “Flats.” As the population increased his charge had to be lessened, and first Kangaroo Ground was separated, and about 18 months ago, at the desire of the Presbyterians, Yarra Glen was joined to Kangaroo Ground, and Lilydale was made one charge. With this one care Mr Mackie was looking forward with pleasure to more active work in and around Lilydale, but his last illness seized him and he was not permitted to go on. He gradually grew worse until he felt that he should resign in charge which he did almost two months ago, much to the regret of his congregation. . . . The aboriginals at Coranderrk had great belief in Mr Mackie, and many a trouble he smoothed over for them. Mr Mackie took an interest in every matter likely to benefit the district, He was one of those who started the Free Library in our township, of which he was at one time President. In many points, Goldsmith’s Village Preacher was applicable to the late reverend gentleman. [Lilydale Express 10-06-1892]

Biography:
Alexander Gordon Middleton was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in about 1828, the son of Richard Middleton and Margaret Lindsay. His father was printer but Alexander studied for the ministry until the ink in his veins took over and he became a printer and later a journalist. He arrived in Victoria in 1871on the Clarence which carried 97 passengers that voyage. He published a volume of verse titled “Ernest, and the Pilgrim Poet” In 1877 at Melbourne, he married Eliza Duncan Hunter aged 45 years, who was born in Refrewshire, Scotland. They did not have any children.
On June 1, 1882 he purchased the Shepparton News from Lachlan McDonald and signed his name as a. Gordon Middleton. He revamped the newspaper, adding a variety of news and fiction to the pages. He remained the publisher and proprietor of the newspaper although in July 1884 he purchased 64 acres from Dennis Rourke, this was known as Lot 1 of section 28, Parish of Yering and was a triangular block of land bounded by the Healesville and Warburton Roads. Today, we know the property as Heatherlie. On June 21, 1888 Middleton sold the Shepparton News to Colin McPherson, and today, the newspaper is still owned and operated by his descendants.
The sale was probably due to Middleton’s failing health as just over four months later he was dead. He died at Gleniffen, Lilydale (probably the name he gave the property we now know as Heatherlie) on October 15, 1888 and was buried at the Lilydale Cemetery by the Rev A Mackie of the Presbyterian Church on October 17th. Dr W.H. Dutton saw Middleton the day before his death the cause of which was given as cirrhosis of the liver and an enlarged heart which he had suffered for about 12 months. [Death certificate, The Argus 16-10-1888 pg 2; Shepparton News various articles]

Biography:
Born near Forfar, Scotland on February 16, 1829, David Mitchell qualified as a stonemason. In 1852 he boarded the barque Anna and set sail for Melbourne. When he arrived David had only one gold sovereign in his pocket. In 1856 as a building contractor, David was involved in securing the eight hour working day for employees in various trades etc. He soon became a prosperous building contractor with projects including Scots Church, Melbourne, the Exhibition Buildings, Melbourne and St Patrick’s Church Lilydale David and his family spent many holidays in the beautiful Yarra Valley.

He also established Cave Hill Farm and in 1899 he bought the first Fresian cattle to Victoria. Despite his Yarra Valley interests, he lived at Doonside until his death on March 25, 1916. Biography:
Robert Morton’s lengthy biography highlights his contribution to the Lilydale community throughout his life. For many years he played with the Lilydale Football Club and captained the team for 23 years. He also played cricket and was president of the Lilydale District Cricket Association and the Yarra Valley Football Association at the time of his death. Athletics was another interest and served as just for the few years the club has been in existence. He was a member of and captain of the Lilydale Fire Brigade and honorary treasurer of the Lilydale Lodge. During World War I he was secretary of the Welcome Home Committee and a member of the bowling club and band. Before WW1 he was an instructing Sergeant in the Mounted Rifles. Lillydale councillor expressed their regret at Robert Morton’s passing. Cr Hughes “deeply lamented the death of such a fine citizen. Though he had differed with him on several matters, he entertained the highest respect for his views, and felt that one of the links with Lilydale of the past had been severed by the passing of Mr Morton.” [Lilydale Express 26-04-1929]
