Obituary:
One of those sudden deaths which struck a community occurred when Mr. Robert Laird died at the Lilydale private hospital on Saturday morning last, after a brief illness. He was stricken down with influenza a week or so ago, and this developed into pneumonia. Medical aid was summoned on Friday last and Mr. Laird was immediately taken to the hospital, where all possible assistance and attention was given, but he was then beyond the aid of doctors and early on Saturday morning he succumbed.
The deceased gentleman was a native of Scotland and had been resident 16 years in Australia, 4½ of which had been spent in the employ of Mr W.M. Black, of Coldstream, as stud master. He also served for four years in the great war, during which period he was badly gassed, and in all probability this was the cause of his unexpected collapse. Mr. Black speaks very highly of deceased, and considers him one of the most competent and reliable man he ever had in his employed. The funeral took place at the Lilydale cemetery. Deceased leaves a widow and little boy, for whom the deepest sympathy is felt. [Lilydale Express 14-05-1926]
Thanks:
Mrs. R. M. Laird wishes to thank all friends, including members of the Lilydale branch of the P.W.M.U., for kind expressions of sympathy in her sad bereavement. “The Quarries” Stud, Coldstream. [Lilydale Express 06-06-1926]

Biography:
John Lithgow, the second son of James White Lithgow, was born in Coleraine Ireland. When he became an adult, he studied for the ministry but did not complete his studies. A family friend, John Gardiner, who had come to Australia and set up the Gardiner’s Creek Cattle Run at Hawthorn, wrote to Lithgow urging him and members of his family to try their fortune here. John Lithgow arrived in 1842 and his brothers, sisters and parents joined him later. His ship mate Robert Blair initially went to the Western district but later joined John Lithgow in Lilydale in 1847.
Blair and Lithgow became wheat farmers growing and delivering wheat to the gold fields. By 1850 they were producing 2,000 bushells of wheat per year. All was going well until the fires of Black Friday in 1851 wiped out their crops.
They started again but three years later in 1854 they decided to go their separate ways.
John settled at a property he called Flowerfield at Lilydale, where he remained for the rest of his life.
He was an active serving member of the community being a member of the original Upper Yarra District Road Board, later the Lillydale Shire; the first Justice of The Peace serving for 25 years, and a consistent supporter of the Church of England. John married Mary Rourke and they had two sons and five daughters. At his funeral in 1893 Reverend Burke summed up his contribution: “The large attendance from all parts of the district testifies the estimation in which our deceased friend John Lithgow was held.” [Lilydale Cemetery Tours Volume 3 pg 19]
