Robert Black
Biography:
Robert Black arrived in Australia with fellow medical student John Kerr in 1857. After seeking gold interstate they settled in Victoria where they leased then later bought 500 acres of land near Lilydale. Robert however left in 1870 returning to Ireland where he married Mary Jane Moore later that year. On returning to Lilydale, Robert bought an estate at Yering he called Coldstream, a name later taken by the nearby town then called The Lodge. Robert and Mary had five sons and two daughters. About 1900, he purchased Cooring Yering, property of the late Colonel Hutton, whose southern boundary was today’s Nelson Road. It was here he spent the remainder of his life.
In the same year, he purchased land at Bald Hill. This became Black’s Quarry, which was originally opened by the railways for ballasting for the railway line to Healesville. The quarry lay idle until 1911 when his son reopened it. Robert’s business interests were sheep, cattle and horse breeding.
His community activities included serving as a Lillydale Shire Councillor from 1873 to 1875; a Justice of the Peace from 1880, and he was involved in the building of the Lilydale Presbyterian Church. His obituary described Robert Black as “a man of strong character and firm determination. He possessed a jovial disposition, but in all business matters always maintained all seriousness. He was kindly disposed and assisted many who required help.” [Melba and Her Mates pg 8 and Tour of Lilydale Cemetery Vol 3 pg 14, Lilydale Express 15-01-1926]

Biography:
Robert Blair arrived in Australia in 1842 with his Irish shipmates John Ewart and John Lithgow. After working as an overseer in the Western District, Robert came to Lilydale and in 1847 went into partnership with John Lithgow and leased 100 acres of land from William Fletcher, a cousin of John Gardiner. Blair and Lithgow became wheat farmers growing and delivering wheat to the gold fields. All was going well until the fires of 1851, which wiped out their crops.
They started again but three years later in 1854 they decided to go their separate ways. Robert continued farming and became involved in local activities. He served on the Upper Yarra District Road Board from 1867 to 1871 and was elected the South West Riding Councillor of the Shire of Lillydale from 1872 to 1887. His children were the first pupils enrolled at the Brushy Creek School. [Lilydale Cemetery Tours Volume 3, pg 15]
Obituary:
On Friday last a very old resident of the Lilydale district, in the person of Mr Robert Blair, died at his residence “Montpellier”, Mooroolbark, at the advanced aged of 70 years. The cause of death was cancer. The deceased gentleman was widely known and highly respected. The funeral took place on Sunday, and was one of the largest ever seen in Lilydale. When the remains left the late residence of the deceased for the Lilydale Cemetery the cortege comprised 69 vehicles and over 50 horsemen. The Rev. J.R. Anderson M.A. of Lilydale officiated at the grave and delivered an excellent and impressive address to those present. In our next issue we shall give a history of Mr Blair’s life in Australia, which will doubtless be read with great interest by all who knew him. [Lilydale Express 21-4-1893]

Fatal Shooting Accident
Boy killed at Silvan
The deadly pea-rifle has been responsible for yet another fatal accident. On Wednesday evening…. George Thomas Burchall, 10 years of age, son of Mr and Mrs Burchall of Silvan, had been accidentally shot while out hunting…In the company of his brother, Jack, and two youths named Bradley and Taylor, deceased went rabbit shooting. Taylor had charge of the rifle, and during their wanderings one of his companions asked him what he would do if he saw a rabbit. Taylor is alleged to have immediately raised the rifle and taken sight at an imaginary target, and just as he pressed the trigger the younger boy Burchall ran in front of him and received the full charge in the back of the head. Death was almost instantaneous. The distressing incident occurred in the bush about a mile from Silvan…..[Lilydale Express 02-05-1930 pg 2]
The shooting was also reported in The Argus 02-03-1930 and Healesville Guardian.
