Biography:
Helen Porter Mitchell was born on May 19, 1861 at the family home in Burnley Street, Richmond, the eldest daughter of David and Isabella Mitchell. Melba’s love of music appeared early and when only six, she made her first public appearance at the Richmond Town Hall in 1867. She attended the Presbyterian Ladies College from 1875 to 1880 and during this time, had singing lessons with Pietro Cecchi. She married Charles Armstrong who she met while living in Queensland and they has one son, George, born in 1883.
Her career as an opera singer was launched in Brussels in 1887 after she had spent a year training under Madame Marchesi. Her stage name “Melba” was chosen as a derivative of the name of her home town, Melbourne. Her first visit home was in 1902 and the people of Lilydale welcomed her in style which included erecting a decorated arch in the Main Street which bore the words: “Lilydale Welcomes Melba”.
While on another visit to Lilydale she purchased a 60 acre property near Coldstream and after renovations and extensions by architect John Grainger, she took possession and re-named it Coombe Cottage.
During the First World War, Melba was engaged in fund raising concerts and her efforts were rewarded when in 1918, King George V created her Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE). In 1928 Melba was created Grand Dame of the British Empire for services to Australia (GBE).
Melba died in Sydney on February 23, 1931 and the world mourned. A special train brought her body to Melbourne where the funeral service was held in Scots Church, built by her father, David Mitchell. The hearse travelled to Lilydale where the coffin was transferred to a gun carriage for the final journey to the Lilydale Cemetery. Fittingly, on her grave are Mimi’s words from La Boheme: “Addio Senza Rancore.” (“Farewell without Bitterness”). [A Tour of the Lilydale Cemetery 1861-1994 Volume One, pgs 9 and 10]
