Biography:
Benjamin McAleese was elected to the Upper Yarra District Road Board in 1869 to 1871and then was elected to represent the South-west Riding of the newly formed shire of Lillydale in 1872. He continued to serve as a councillor until 1877. In 1876 he had three children attending the local state school and he worked two properties: 346 acres he leased from Robert Laidlaw and 54 acres of Crown land in Mooroolbark. Biography:
A serious accident happened on Friday last to Mrs A. E. McComas of [Montrose] She was driving a spirited pony which got out of control and dashed into a tree, throwing Mrs McComas out with great force onto the road and breaking her collar bone . . Dr Syme of Lilydale set the broken bone. [Box Hill Reporter 24-05-1912]

Mr McComas was Alfred Ernest; Mrs McComas nee Brooke. Their sons Robert and Charles served in WW1; their daughter Edith died 27-8-1982 and is buried at Lilydale. [Montrose files]

James Henry McComb

Biography:
James Henry McComb appointed engineer and surveyor for Lillydale shire in 1896, resigning from similar positions at Doncaster and Nunawading shires. In 1897 the positions of shire secretary and shire engineer were combined and J. H. McComb was appointed. [Prosperity and Progress 1889-1989 p29]

The town and district of Lilydale will mourn for a very long time the death of Mr James Henry McComb. [His] 17 years of honorable citizenship and secretary and engineer to the ratepayers of the Lilydale Shire . . the large attendance at the funeral bore testimony that his friends and admirers were legion . . [He] laid out and supervised the construction of various bridges . . [He] was the son of Thomas Kerr McComb (deceased) and Grace McComb who recently celebrated her 86th birthday at her Frankston home . . [He] was born in Melbourne 61 years ago, moving to Frankston with his parents, educated at a private school . . becoming a teacher in the Echuca district . . later while teaching at Dandenong, he took up the study of civil engineering . . Biography:
John McCord who was born in Kerry about 1845. He married Margaret Sullivan He was a Church of England minister. The family lived at the Parsonage, Lilydale. He died at Box Hill. The McCords lived at Inverleigh, Victoria; 'Wellington', Springvale; Lilydale.

Biography:
Margaret was born in about 1852, the daughter of Henry Sullivan and Frances Texada. They had five children: Charles Texada (1877); Percy Albert (1879); Arthur Presley; Edith Ella (1884) and Ernest George Gordon (1885).

After her husband’s death, Kate McCormack (as in the ratebooks) sold the property – Lot 55 Lilydale Township Estate to Colin Thomson, a railway worker.

Joseph Nash McEwin

Biography:
Joseph Nash McEwin (1828-1915) born Balcary, Kirkudbrightshire. He arrived on barque David Clarke with his parents in 1839. His father John McEwin established the colony’s first nursery at Heidelberg using plants he had bought with him from Scotland. He also selected the site for the Botanical Gardens for Governor LaTrobe. John McEwin had been head gardener to the Duke of Buccleuch before coming to Victoria. A grandson and great grandson are currently at Burnley Horticultural Gardens. His eldest son George wrote Australian Gardener the first Australian work on horticulture. H. McEwin wrote the Fruitgrowers Handbook.
Seventh son Joseph was married at Heidelberg in 1851.

[He] had been ailing for three years, and his death was not unexpected. A magisterial inquiry was held by Mr Buller JP and the funeral took place today. [Lilydale Express 24-07-1889]

John McGhee was the eldest son of John and Janet (nee Paul) McGhee. The family lived in Cave Hill Road. Obituary: The dread disease diphtheria has made its appearance in Lilydale and we regret to hear that Mr McGee (McGhee), the well-known carrier, has just lost a fine son aged about four years by this complaint. It is to be hoped our health authorities will make every effort to banish so unwelcome a visitor. [Lilydale Express 13-06-1888 g 2]

James McGhee

Biography:
James was the surviving child of John and Jane (nee Paul) McGhee.
Obituary:
In the last issue we stated that Mr McGhee had lost a son by diphtheria. We now learn that another child of Mr McGhee’s has succumbed to this malady, and considerable sympathy is felt for the sorrowing parents, who are now left childless. Two fine children have thus been suddenly cut off, and every effort should be made to trace the disease to its source, and if possible prevent any further cases arising . . . Janet McGhee

Biography:
Janet was the daughter of Henry William and Janet (nee Bennett) Paul. H.W. Paul was the secretary of the Shire of Lillydale. She was born in Alloa Scotland on March 16, 1858. She married John Slater, the son of James and Eleanor (nee Briggs) Slater in 1879 but he died in 1881 aged 25 years. Janet married John McGhee in 1884 and they had three children: John, James and John Henry. John McGhee was originally a wood cutter but became a real estate agent and carrier in Lilydale in 1915. He became a well-respected businessman and was a Councillor of the Shire of Lillydale, serving from 1913 to 1931. He was president in 1920 and1926. Obituary:
We regret to announce the death of Mrs McGhee, wife of Mr John McGhee, of Cave Hill road  . . . Mrs McGhee has been ill for some time, and her end was not altogether unexpected. The deceased lady was the daughter of Mr H. W. Paul, secretary of the Lilydale Shire, and was widely known and respected throughout the district. [Lilydale Express 09-04-1890 pg 2]

John Henry McGhee

Biography:
John Henry was the third son of John and Janet (nee Paul) MGhee. He was born shortly before his mother’s death in 1890.

John Robert Arthur McGhee

Biography:
John Robert was the son of John and Alice Matilda (nee Munday) and was born at Lilydale in 1896. Following his wife Janet’s death in 1890, John McGhee married Alice Munday at Heidelberg in 1893. The McGhee family left Lilydale around 1939 and settled in Canterbury.
John McGhee died at Hartwell in 1948 aged 86 years and Alice in 1957 aged 86 years. Both are buried at the Box Hill Cemetery. [BDM Indexes, LDHS files]

Mrs S.R. Rumble An old and respected identity of the district in the person of Mrs Sarah Rebecca Rumble passed away at her late residence, Mt Evelyn . . . after a short illness. Deceased had reached the advanced age of 77 years and was highly esteemed for her kindly and charitable disposition. A family of one son and two daughters are left to mourn their loss – Harry, Bella (wife of Mr McGregor JP, Mount Evelyn), and Ada (Mrs Parker). Rev. J.J. Jane McIlrath was the widow of John Kerr and lived in Croydon. In 1928 she married married Thomas King McIlrath and with her three daughters Jean, Nettie and Beth went to live at the family dairying and cattle property ‘Hillbury’ in Cambridge Road, Mooroolbark. Biography:
William McIlwrath was born about 1822. He married Matilda McNally who was born about 1838. He was the original selector of Section 12A Parish of Mooroolbark – land along Cambridge Rd, Kilsyth. His occupation was that of a grazier. [Montrose LDHS files]
Obituary:
We regret sincerely having to report the death of Mr William McIlwrath, an old resident of this district who passed away at Mooroolbark on Saturday last. The deceased was 73 years of age. The funeral took place on Sunday, when the remains were interred in the Lilydale cemetery. The Rev J.M. James conducted the burial service, and Messrs Burton Bros, carried out the funeral arrangements [Lilydale Express 28-05-1909 pg 2]

Was the son if King and Jane McIlwraith and was born about 1840 in Country Antrim, Ireland. He was an original selector in the district taking up Crown Lot 12b2 Parish of Mooroolbark and the north-east corner of Cambridge and Lilydale roads. He also had Crown Lot 22c2 Parish of Mooroolbark on the north side of Cambridge Rd on the corner of Pembroke Rd. [LDHS Montrose archives]

Obituary:
Residents of the Lilydale and Upper Yarra district were grieved to learn of the death of Mr John Goodall, aged 84, at his residence, Chapel street, Lilydale, early this week. The late Mr Goodall spent most of his early life at Lilydale, later removing to Yarra Junction, where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits. Latterly he returned to Lilydale.
